With Atkins fat is not your enemy. In fact its the fat combined with high carb that is dangerous. Fat by itself is safe. From the Atkins website: Fat is the mechanism that makes controlled carbohydrate weight loss work. he Atkins Nutritional Approach teaches you how to use fat to your advantage. When you are doing Atkins, fat is your friend not only because it is satiating but because it slows down the release of glucose into the blood. By moderating blood sugar swings, fat reduces carbohydrate cravings. Dietary fat, in combination with controlled carbohydrate consumption, accelerates the burning of stored body fat. When your body uses fat, rather than glucose for fuel, the metabolic process is called lipolysis. Eating fat accelerates the burning of fat, dietary and stored.
Please get his book. It makes so much sense to eat this way for life. This is not a fad diet nor is it dangerous. Why Not Low Fat Atkins?

Foods high in fat are good for you, its the carbohydrates that compromise our health. Do a search on Amazon for Gary Taubes. If you're really committed to this way of eating, you should order his books. Good Calories, Bad Calories was a game changer for me.

"If" you are going to low carb in an effort to lose weight then you must have a plan. "If" your plan is to follow an Atkins Low Carb plan then read one of the books that describes the plan. I personally like Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution ( DANDR) Please note I am not suggesting you follow this, but it is what I did and am still doing, so I speak from experience. The book can be ordered used from various online places for less than $5. I am sure it is in bookstores near you and perhaps used stores as well. Bottom-line is "if" you are going to do this then you need to be properly prepared. Buy the book and read it completely,,,right away. Then read the chapters that apply to you right now again until you fully understand WHY low carbing works. I had the same wonders about LC'ing until I read the book. Once I read it and understood the science behind it, it made all the difference in the world. If you choose not to do that plan, then which ever one you choose, get the plan and read and understand what you are doing. The understanding of why we use full fat mayo and full fat creams is crystal clear. And yes, it seems totally opposite of what we have all been taught and learned. Hmmm... and I was always fat too! Another thing I would suggest. I seem to remember from a previous post that you are a young man, what 17? I haven't read your numbers re: what you weigh and what your desires are re: losing and/or goal weight. While that is your personal info you will find that people here will respond to helping you and can help you better if they have an understanding of what it is you are trying to do. I would suggest your posting your numbers. That is up to you. But remember, it is all done behind a computer and can be totally anonymous, so be honest. I think that is one of the great things about LCF -- We can be totally honest without feeling we are being held in judgement by others, yet as we accomplish feats we are all there to share and to cheer for each other. Great place to be. Finally, you have your entire life ahead of you. If you need to lose a good bit of weight now is the time to do it. I really, really, really...did I mention really?, wished I had learned about and understood LC'ing so many years ago. I have dropped over 150 lbs and am in about the best health I have been in my entire adult life. I grad high school at about 325 lbs nearly 37 years ago. I rose to 429 lbs at my highest and now after less than 3 years of LCing I am about 275 today and still losing. What LCing does for you, if you choose that method, is changes your outlook on food. For the first time in my life I control food and food does not control me. If you are a heavy teenager, I feel for you as I was as well, but please know you can take control, as you are doing and win. Get educated and best of luck. You can do it! If I can ever be of help, please just ask. |

You should also understand that attempting to eat very low carb AND low fat at the same time can damage your health. There are only three types of food to choose from: carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
If you don't make up for the loss of calories from the carbs you cut out with an increase in either fats or proteins, you are going to be hungry and miserable and start to lose muscle tissue instead of fat. That is not a good thing. If you don't increase the fat, the only thing left is to increase protein. When you intake excess protein, your liver, through a process known as gluconeogenisis, can create glucose from protein. This can interfere with insulin metabolism which leads to storing MORE fat, and making your attempts to get into ketosis to burn fat fail. This process can also cause damage to the liver and kidneys. Fat is essential. (When we say fat, we are talking about healthy omega 3 fats from fish, pastured animals, pastured whole dairy and eggs, olive oil and coconut oil. NOT transfatty acids or too many Omega 6 nut and seed oils). Please do not attempt low carbing without relying an authority like Atkins (there are others--e.g. Michael Eades "Protein Power", Mark Sisson's "Primal Blueprint", etc) and without a full understanding of what you are doing. You can seriously damage your health! If you have a lot of weight to lose, your best chance for long term success is a careful and considered approach with MEDICAL supervision. Keep looking to find a doctor who is knowledgable about the benefits of a ketogenic diet. |

I am now on a low carb diet, although not Atkins. I read my book of choice thoroughly, so that I know what I'm doing.
If you are serious about low carbing, why not read your book of choice (like Atkins) so that you know what you're doing? I'd be lost without proper instructions. I think most of us would be. |

What everybody said. This is your body, your life. Don't try to patch something together based on things you have heard and been told. Your health deserves to be taken seriously. And your health is intimately entangled with your weight and with what you eat. Get a few books, do some research, learn more about yourself - the diet I thrive on may not be best for you. Read, explore, experiment, learn why we don't talk about being on a diet - we talk about having a way of eating (woe) and a way of life (wol).
On a side and unrelated note, there is a white squirrel munching down sunflower seeds on my back deck. Last edited by gotsomeold; 11-05-2011 at 01:30 PM.. Reason: spelling |
