Intermittent Fasting

I have been eating low carb/Atkins for 18 months and have lost 70 lbs. I was still struggling with binge eating. I discovered Intermittent fasting and thought I would give it a try for a week and see what results I would get.I fast for 19 hours and eat during a 5 hr. window. I still eat low carb during my window of eating. I discovered I don't obsess over my meals, and I finally started to lose the abdominal fat that is still lingering after my weight loss. I am now on my third week of intermittent fasting and I have lost 1 inch in my measurements, and I am pleased with the results. This is a way of eating that I plan on sticking with. If you have tried or are doing intermittent fasting please share your thoughts and results.

First welcome!!!

I was a high volume binger. I can't tell you enough how intermittent fasting has helped me along with atkins. I learned to have times of fasting and times of eating it gave me discipline. I had to work up to 19 hours because at first my blood glucose would go to low but I quickly worked up to the full 19 hours.

Intermittent fasting did not work as well for me as low-carb did.

I used it as an excuse to eat refined carbs every time. This meant I ate less and lost weight but didn't get enough nutrients.

After a few weeks on IF I had hair loss, weakness, palpitations and frequent illnesses.

I tried it again maybe once or twice and felt the same.

On LC I can lose weight and feel well, and snack anytime I want, so it seems to work much better.

I do it with Low carb. I find it much easier after the initial hunger subsides...it then just becomes the norm. I love how it makes me feel and the ease of it!

Congrats on you weight loss success!

I fast from 7pm-11am and then usually eat two meals during my "window". I have been doing this for a year! I too don't have any obsessions over food and is what helped me lose the last few pounds of vanity weight.

I never used it as an excuse to eat carbs. I used it conjunction with low carb it was quite effective for me. I had hair loss on a low/no fat diet.

I do it with Atkins/Primal and it happens naturally to be honest. When you eat low carb, you aren't as hungry.

I have been trying the warrior diet and to me its kinda like IF except you do get to have some whey prten and fruits veggies only if you need it. Then eat a big dinner. I'm finding it easy and I'm loving how I feel doing this. I start eating my heavier food at 530 and have my last snack at 8p. I have a protein shake in the morning, v8 juice with some added protein and an apple during the day if I need it. I'm really liking it. I'm eating almost 100 total carbs per day, which is amazing for me and steadily going down in weight. Slowly but that's ok with me. Its a great very easy way to eat.

Same for me- I naturally transitioned from two meals to one most days and it works extremely well, but I don't use it as an excuse to become a crappy carb inhaling machine. I stick to low carb but since I am in maintenance I eat more carbs in the form of vegetables.

I love IF because it makes eating so much easier- less prep, less work in the kitchen, and less time spent fussing over food. I love the meals I make and the food I eat but I don't want to be spending all day thinking/preparing many meals and snacks etc and being consumed by food.

ETA If you do IF you have to make sure you are hydrated enough and drink enough water throughout the day and have enough salt in your diet because otherwise you will experience dizziness and headaches.

Intermittent fasting has worked really well for me. It was the only thing that budged my last few lbs to lose (menopause regain, which is tough). I still do my regular low carb food, but I eat only during a 5 hour window (noon to 5 pm). I do drink coffee with 1 T of heavy cream in the morning. It took me a week or two to get used to it, and I still get hungry in the morning, but it also taught me that morning hunger is not a big deal.

I love IF! I tried JUDDD for the past 3 weeks, thinking it might be easier with my travel schedule, but for my body, IF works a lot better.

It's the fast-5 diet!

Welcome to the Fast-5 website | Fast-5 Life

But low carb, obviously. I think the reason it works so well is the fasting time really keeps you in ketosis, and keeps insulin low. I love how I feel eating low carb with intermittent periods of not eating. I still drink iced tea and water all day.

Intermittent Fasting.. 5 hour eating window. I realized when I was reading this thread that this is what I naturally do. I'm generally not hungry in the morning (I usually get nauseous if I eat anytime before noon). I'm also a slave to my desk all day from 8-6, so eating between those hours is rare, unless I meet my boyfriend out for lunch. My eating window is more like 2 hours, from 7-9.

Intermittent fasting works well for many. I was a 'natural' I.F.er because my first meal of the day was around noon but I zeroed in on the eating window and was eating mostly 1 meal a day for quite a while with coffee/hwc in the a.m.. During that time, I neither lost nor gained but really liked it.

I have heard some people report that as eating disorders go, this is a trigger woe.

I want to understand what about IF is a trigger.

I was one off the worst binger ever, I ate virtually every waking moment before. IF helped me discern real true hunger, as well as having times of eating and times of resting from eating. This has be so valuable for me, looking back I ate low carb but still had binging behavior, IF helped me to gain discipline. Like I have mentioned before I had to work up to the 19 hour fast because my blood glucose would go to low but quickly improved.

It's more a trigger for anorexia than binging.

I have done both with and without coffee with similar results. I do drink coffee with almond milk as I am maintaining now. The websight above will give you the rules which are so easy.

Ok, I can see how it would not be good for anorexia.

I prefer not to go over the 19 hour fasting time because It doesn't feel natural to my body after that.

Thank you Knittering - I wasn't thinking about what kind of disorders when I posted but I guess I should have been more specific.
I would say I had binging 'issues' prior to low carb but I.F. did not come into play at all with that issue but quite the opposite. Like sistertzu, I found I.F. helped me in many positive ways.

I fast during the day and my eating window is from 6-10pm. I do stay as low carb as possible but don't obsess over it and I do drink a couple cups of coffee with creamer in the mornings and then Yerba Mate tea and water as I want the rest of the day. Sometimes on weekends if I want I will have a high-protein breakfast.

I've been doing this since last fall and went to low-carb in January of this year and I've lost 85lbs. I would have done better but I messed up big time when I tried to combine IF and HCG, big mistake, it sent me into a feeding frenzy like I've never experienced before and I've just recently got back on track and started losing again. Lesson learned: "If it ain't broke don't fix it".

It's not such a trigger for anorexia, or at least I do not find it so.
As a former anorexic I'd go mad trying to plan 3+ meals per day, that meant thinking of food almost constantly, and I already found it rather easy to think of food all the time! :P One meal is one meal, it does not require much planning, most of my time of free of thinking of food, it saves my sanity of mind.

I'm against this common thought that fasting triggers anorexia, because anorexia is no fasting, anorexia is obsessing on food, counting calories to death, weighting to exhaustion, that by itself is more common on many meals per day than just one, in my opinion.

Wow, it just goes to show that all of us are so different.

I appreciate the differences and hope that everyone can find what works for themselves. I can only convey my experience in the hope that it may help someone as I have been helped by so many different points of view.

I have been thinking about doing IF. I think I've kind of been doing it lately. I have always struggled with stalling out on LC because I ate free for all LC foods. So I've been trying to limit and just not eat like crazy. I've been skipping breakfast and then having a small lunch and dinner. Wasn't sure if it was healthy or not but the weight is dropping and I don't have any bad effects. So I fast pretty much from 8 pm to noon everyday. I think I might try closing the window to 5 hours.

For those that fast, do you drink anything? If I am not eating breakfast or lunch, then I need to have some hot tea with coconut oil and cream to keep me going. Is that really considered fasting?

I drink a lot of water throughout the day and maybe some plain tea or black coffee.

If you are consuming something like co with so many calories I wouldn't really consider it strict fasting, because even with juice fasts you are getting in very few, but I don''t think it matters, as long as it works for you.

IF seems very healthy and the health benefits reported by research from fasting like that are great. I think that as long as you are getting in enough food during your one meal and enough fluids throughout the day to keep hydrated it is very healthy (barring certain medical conditions of course).

Vanessa, do you feel you lose equally well within the extended window? I may need to extend mine as well ... due to work/commute reasons I can't eat twice within the 5 hr. window.
