Suggestions for Protein Shakes for people that don't like Protein Shakes?

I've come to the conclusion that I really need to keep some protein shake powder at my work, because I have a bad habit of cutting things too close during my morning hours and having to dash out the door without having breakfast.

I'd like to be able to mix something up at work and not worry about it so much.

Unfortunately, I did Optifast (twice!) when that was in vogue, so the taste of most protein powders/shakes makes me want to gag, as I associate it with that taste.

Does anyone have a good suggestion for a decent-tasting protein powder/shake with low carbs? I'd prefer the protein be whey-based, if possible.

Thanks!

I suggest trying and UNflavored whey protein. About Time brand or Jay Robb brand. Both very good. Then add your own flavors.

My basic repcie is:
4'TBSP heavy whipping cream ( i prefreeze this)
8 TBSP unsweetened almond milk (also prefrozen)
1/2 cup water
1 scoop protein powder

Then I mix in something from this list to flavor: stevia, cocoa powder, strawberries, capella flavor drops. You could add vanilla extract or other flavors of extrats.

I've tried many different kinds, believe me, lol!! For me the best tasting (and low carb too) is Jay Robb's. I always have vanilla on hand because I can flavor them however I want with syrups but now and then I'll buy a different flavor too, they're all good. Not sure where you live, we have Vitamin Shoppes here and they have single packets so you can try them out before you make the investment in a whole container. Its a little on the pricier side but for me, the flavor makes it worth it.

Pumpkin Egg Cream Shake
1/3 cup pumpkin (Pre-freeze this)
1/4 cup Heavy cream (pre-freeze this)
1 egg
1/4 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
1/2 cup water
Sweetener of choice (I use stevia)

Mix well in a blender.

Pre-freezing the pumpkin and HWC make it more milkshake/ice cream like.
I use an ice tray and freeze a whole bunch at once. I store pumpkin cubes, hwc cubes and almond milk cubes in freezer bags in my deep freeze so I have everything on hand for quick shakes.

My favorite is the bag of protein at Costco, in vanilla. Very convenient for work situations. I use a Blender Bottle, and either mix it with a can of diet rootbeer (mix with a little water to dissolve the powder, and then add the soda) or some lemonade crystal light.

Im always amazed when people talk about how great the Jay Robb protein is. I bought some vanilla, and it was so thin and gross I actually just threw it away.

Oh, we all definitely have definitive likes and dislikes of protein powders that's for sure, lol. And you'll always find someone that loves what we may think disgusting. To me, most of the others taste, ummm, mechanical, for lack of a better term, they just have a weird taste that I don't notice w/Jay Robb. I tend to never drink my protein shakes simply mixed in my blender bottle if I can help it (they are always too thin) but I add my own 'stuff' and crushed ice to make it thicker. In any case, I suppose tastes in protein powders are not different than anything else; most people love eggs in all their forms but I'm not much of a fan of more than a scrambled egg now and then w/sf ketchup, lol, I think they're mostly disgusting.

If you can get a sample of something before you commit, definitely do that.

Very true, Im sure if you were blending into a smoothie the Jay Robb powder would be more palatable. It definitely has good nutrition and comes in lots of flavors! Samples are great ideas

I use the Costco Kaizen whey isolate in decadent chocolate with sucralose.

1.5 scoops (50g protein)
1/2 cup water
2 tbsp. hwc
1 egg
4 ice cubes
a couple of drops of sucralose
1 espresso

It is a BIG breakfast with about 60g of protein (about 2g carbs) and lasts me for many hours. I love the idea of using crystal lite to flavour it. Trying that tomorrow and will have my espresso on the side!!

When all else fails: get an unflavored or vanilla and toss a packet of s/f drink mix in it. Vanilla with cherry lime-aid or orange is my favorite The individual drink mix packets, not the 2 quart kind lol.

I just bought a bottle of cherry lime sf Torani syrup! I was a little scared to make a shake with it but added it this morning and it was really good!

Anyone have any ideas on how to dissolve egg protein powders so my shakes aren't lumpy? I've tried premixing it with warm liquid and it cooked it.

I suspect an allergy to alcohol. Is that possible? Any of the sugar alcohols and sucrolse to make me sick. It starts with a warming sensation in my neck, turns into a terrible headache. If I have too much I will throw up. I CAN do stevia and aspartame with no ill effects but recently read that AS can cause depression so I am doing stevia only for now. I assume an allergy to alcohol because drinking does the same thing to me. Two swallows of a wine cooler and I am sick. My H always made fun of me because I wouldnt drink. Oh well. Lol

My favorite unflavored protein is JARROWS Unflavored Whey Protein.
It doesn't taste or smell like "protein powder" at all; if anything, it smells a bit like powdered milk.
You can mix it into creamy, savory things like soup, Alfredo sauce, mashed cauliflower...

...or sweet things, like pudding & yogurt.

For a TOTALLY different flavor, and lots of fiber and healthy fats, try hemp protein powder. I love it...I make "oatmeal" with it, mixed with almond flour or psyllium husks. But it also makes good shakes, if you use a little bit of fruit. Or peanut butter, to bring out the nutty taste of the hemp.

And I have always found chocolate protein shakes to taste WEIRD.
I get vanilla protein, and add real cocoa powder! Much better!
