by the Grain Food Foundation. Ok I do eat some whole grains and sprouted grains but seriously trying to say enriched wheat products are healthy?

Dr. Davis has responded to this in his blog, The Heart Scan Blog | Measure, track, and reduce coronary atherosclerotic plaque. It's the entry on 9/4 entitled An Open Letter to the Grain Foods Foundation.

The comments in response to their laughable "defense" are priceless. Toward the end, Dr. Davis questions the tight relationship between the Grain Foods Foundation and representatives of Pharma. I doubt he'll get a response. Talk about symbiosis!

It's all about the money to these big corporations, no surprise there. They'll say and/or do anything in the name of the almighty dollar. Some of them may even be uneducated about the dangers of their product.

Organizations like that need to learn not to allow comments when they publish garbage like that.

As soon as I saw Besides this, the advice dished out by Dr. Davis is completely counter to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the gold standard of scientifically-sound nutrition advice. I knew we were in for a good ride! The gold standard for making people fat and sick perhaps. Wow I was just reading more, they really got a pounding from their comments! I can't believe they actually published all those comments.

I was looking around their site more, and they 'responded' to the comments, but in a political avoid-the-issue sort of style: http://www.sixservings.org/2011/09/y...d-we-answered/

I was thinking more about how they say "Dietary Guidelines for Americans, the gold standard of scientifically-sound nutrition advice." I find it interesting they would use the words 'gold standard'. That was from a time when our currency actually had value, rather than being backed by the 'faith and credit' of the government. Both the true value of currency, and the gov't dietary guidelines, have decreased so much over the years.

Gold standard means it's been backed by clinical trials. The current dietary standards are not. They're based on unproven (and false) assertions and misinterpreted (possibly deliberate) papers. Most of the papers that the dietary guidelines for Americans reference don't even SUPPORT the dietary guidelines for Americans!

I just bought Wheat Belly today and started reading it - VERY interesting so far!

Wheat is already gone from my diet as well as almost all grains. I'm a celiac, too.

I did laugh at the "gold standard" comment - when I read that I thought "Who says it's the gold standard? You? Isn't that a bit ... biased?"

Of course the RDA for Vitamin D is just enough to prevent rickets, not a recommendation.

Ugh.

I'm gluten intolerant and don't absorb the vitamins from grains or gluten-containing products, so I get aggravated when I hear so many commercials of products like cereals, etc saying they are high in vitamin D and other vitamins. I guess these products are ok for people who don't have problems though. I just don't see how Cocoa Puffs really fit into a category of being nutricious. My DD has no problems with foods and yes, she does eat junk and sugary cereals sometimes, but still I wouldn't qualify Cocoa Puffs or some of the other cereals as being a staple of her diet.

Most of the 'vitamins' in cereals are synthetic vitamins they add to the product. Also iirc most cereals and similar products, when they quote the nutrition info, they are including the cup of milk or however much they want put in with the product. So that might be where the vitamin D is coming from. Which again in store bought industrial milk the vitamin D is added to the product; it is not naturally occurring.

They will do anything to sell the product and they have so many parents believing it's good for their kids

People with a dairy intolerance or allergy isn't absorbing the nutrients from milk either. Of course, they won't tell you that on their million dollar commercials
