For All You Cheaters and So-called Underachievers Out There

Ok, so you can't seem to make it through a week without cheating.

And you beat yourself up and call yourself all kinds of self-fulfilling prophecy, ugly names and feel badly about your transgressions and wonder if you're crazy or just "not meant" for LC...and all manner of self-flagellating abuse.

I hate Dr. Phil, but love the phrase, "So how's that working for you?"

So I used to think that way a long time ago. Then life caught up with me and taught me a lesson (or 10 or 20)! So here are some of them encapsulated for you and I hope these will help bring a little clarity to your life and allow you to just "relax", and breathe.

1. Choosing to eat off plan does not make you a failure.

2. Choosing to eat off plan will not significantly effect the success of your weight loss journey. The most power it has will be to delay loss and temporarily result in water gain over the next few days.

3. You body chemistry contributes to the choices you make in your eating. In other words, sometimes your fat sabotages you and signals you to eat or want to binge. That isn't a conscious decision, but works on the autonomic level.

4. Eating LC 90% of the time and "going off plan" 10% of the time is STILL better than eating crap 100% of the time.

5. Everything in baby steps. Sometimes life is about babysteps. It's about incrementally increasing the likelihood of succeeding with your agenda - whatever that is...so take it that way. Make a plan and don't be afraid to detour. It's the black and white thinking that sinks ships and ruins plans.

6. Stress hormones are far worse for fat loss than a solitary choice to eat an offplan meal or snack. The secret in this is knowing that after you do it, you get right back onto plan without any stress or drama or beatings. Because one thing I can assure you? The beatings will continue until morale improves.

7. Get your rest.

8. Drink your water.

9. Never let yourself get too hungry, angry, lonely or tired (HALT).

10. Life is short. Give yourself permission to love yourself and have a little fun along the way.

Over these past 11 years of LC (on again/off again...more on than off). I've managed to lose a lot of weight and keep a lot of it off. I've had fun along the way and learned so many things. I went from being a neo-foodnazi, to being a half-azzer, to being somewhere in the middle of it all before ascribing to my 90/10 philosophy of life.

Alls it takes is getting one little diagnosis of a dread disease to make you appreciate what is REALLY important in life...and diet should never be more important than love, relationships, and peace.

So wishing you all less obsession and more peace!

What a lovely post to inspire people who are struggling and have issues staying perfectly on plan at all times!!! "fat sabotages" I took this to mean everything isn't always just being weaklings or wanting to be off plan. There are addictions to food and hormones that cause you to drive to the store and buy cookies sometimes.

I can't complain if someone posts week after week they cheat. Isn't this a support group?? I've seen people here, myself included, not get this 100% right but they need to count the progress. This could be the post they need to be inspired to stop beating themselves up and break the cycle. There are people on this board that need this post. People deserves seconds, thirds and fourth chances to get this LC thing right. Just like smoking and drugs. Cold Turkey doesn't work for everyone.

THANKS POOTI FOR THE REMINDER!!!!!

I totally agree! Life is about finding balance and doing your best every day! We are not perfect. One thing I *did* learn is that, in the beginning of lc'ing, I needed that attitude of no cheating at all because I was so easily tempted by high carb foods. Once my body stabilized and it became a WOE, an occasional higher carb food does not derail me at all.

Thank you so much Pooticus! Very inspirational especially the part about health and realizing what matters most in life. Age, hormones, our past dieting history so much goes into what drives hunger/binging. I have learned to save my breath and just give a nod, because unless you are a binger and have been driven to overeat you will never understand it.

Great post Pooticus, I know I tend to be very all or nothing with my eating. It I go off plan, I tend to keep eating poorly because I "blew it", so what's the point? I am trying really hard to have a balanced view of eating. This thread is very helpful.

How timely considering I just unhinged my jaw and swallowed half a plate of peanut butter cookies in the conference room. I have done this several times since I started LC and I always just get back to plan the next meal. Extremely happy with my weight loss and WOE.

Oh I can make it for long periods of time and do. But from time to time, I choose to eat something off plan. I don't plan ahead to do it. Just spur of the moment, "I am going to eat those XXXX." Then the next meal will be right back on plan. I have done this several times over the past 10 months. I can't say that I am proud of it, but it happens and then I move on. And yes I do wonder if it will ever cause my WOE to crash around me. So far, so good. I weigh every day and keep the failures in check.

Thanks for the very inspirational post. I know that hormones and stress and a multitude of different factors can cause you to want to cheat. Sometimes we can get past the urge and sometimes we give in. The key point that was made is that we don't beat ourselves up. We get right back on the wagon. This is real life and we can't be perfect all the time. Just be sure to not get discouraged and get right back on track.

Thanks again.

This ^^^

Since starting LC in January 2011 I have lost 64lbs. My 1st cheat was on Easter and I had a VERY hard time staying back on plan. But, I did it. Since then I have had about 3-4 more cheats and it seems that it may partly be a mind over matter situation for getting back on plan. It seems to get easier for me to get back on the wagon each time.

YMMV, however...and it all boils down to finding what works best for you and working that plan to achieve your weight loss and health goals!
