15 veggies/fruits you can skip organic

15 Reasons Not to Buy Organic on Shine

The article discusses 15 fruits and veggies, many of which are LC and eaten by many of us (e.g., avocados, cabbage, eggplant, onions, asparagus, cantaloupe, sweet potatoes and mushrooms) that tend not to absorb pesticides. The article suggests people skip buying these items in organic varieties because of this and use the money where it "does the most good... meat, milk...". I thought it was useful information worth sharing.

What frustrates me about those types of articles is it misses the point. Those 15 pesticide-ridden crops are still contributing to ground/air/water pollution. So there is still a reason to buy all organic produce.

Don't get me wrong. I'm picking and choosing which organic items to buy as well. It is valuable info for that. I just get annoyed with articles promoting the concept that pesticide residue is the only thing anybody should ever be worried about.

That list of course comes from the EWG (Environmental Working Group) and the dirty dozen/clean fifteen

Of course it's environmentally devastating still but when one can't afford to purchase 100% organic, this is a good start for many. It just so happens that this article is less sensitive to the environment than the EWG might be.

Many of the environmental benefits of organic are not related directly to the produce itself, it seems. I have plenty of fellow farmers who are organic, and we use the exact same pesticides and fertilizers. The only difference for most of them seems to be the production method of the fertilizers-- we use a nitrogen source that is derived from natural gas, and organic fertilizers aren't.

Our farm gets inspected regularly for pesticide residues, and the inspector said our levels would easily qualify for organic certification. But then I had a neighbor whose organic certification got revoked because it turned out a supplier had mislabeled his fertilizer as organic when it wasn't. The difference in his produce itself was not detectable, though.

It's all pretty vague. But in general, yes, organic foods are less likely to pollute, but maybe not in the ways we think.
