Coffee

I'm sure this has been asked a million times, but how do you all feel about low-carb and coffee? I noticed in the original Atkins book he said no to more than 3 cups a day. I know coffee doesn't raise my blood sugar, but I'm wondering if it can have any other effects.

I've been doing low-carb since Feb and have lost about 8 pounds. A problem for me was the Atkins bars, which I've now eliminated. I'm wondering if I should maybe get rid of coffee too . . .

Thanks in advance for help.

Same here, coffee never hurt my weight loss. I drink it black with Splenda.

I've never found a great decaf. I've found the Folgers is okay, but the taste isn't the same as fresh ground beans. Ah, heaven!

I *think* the bars were the issue. I guess I'll have to wait and see if the weight starts moving the right direction again. Thanks!

Well, without coffee, why bother even staying alive?

Gotta' have my coffee. LOL Seriously, I never had any difficulty with weight loss that I ever laid at the feet of coffee. For myself, I don't have any trouble with it. Hope that will be the same for you.

I've been drinking my coffee with 1 T HWC and Equal, but then I switched to Spenda today.

And I'm with you, SoHappy--I've given up smoking, beer, and most carbs--giving up my coffee would just be too much!

I drink decaf coffee almost daily, so I'm not preaching, here...
But coffee increases cortisol, which is linked to belly fat.

The Martinson brand is pretty decent, for a decaf. Also, at work we used to use Jim's organic coffee, and it was good.

A good coffee substitute is Dandy Blend. I drink it on its own occasionally, but I also sometimes make a weak 2nd cup of coffee & add a spoonful of DB. It's made of chicory & roasted dandelion root, and is good for liver health. Also, it is not as acid-producing as coffee, for anyone interested in pH balance.

Bwhahaha! That's about how I feel. It's my last vice and I'm clinging to it HARD.

I might have to try that coffee, piratejenny--I wouldn't mind going de-caf if the flavor was there. It's not the caffeine push, it's the taste. Well . . . and the whole smell and ritual thing.

Yeah, I honestly don't care about the caffeine at all.
Coffee just smells so good when it's brewing!
I even like smelling the beans!!!

I love coffee. I drink a lot of it, like maybe 7-10 cups a day. I would be miserable and hungry without it. It makes sticking to this diet so much more pleasant for those around me. I drink it with splenda. I will add a little HWC if I'm super hungry or having cravings.

Gotta have my coffee. I make a lattes or frappucino type drinks using 100 calorie muscle milk daily -- I ususally use 3 cups of coffee for 1 MM. works well for me.

Yup! I love my decaf. I drink maxwell house but I tend to have a lot of expensive italian decaf expresso beans and decaf designer coffees too.

I've never heard of Dandy Blend but I used to drink a coffee substitute made from chicory root. As I recall, I liked it very much. Can't remember WHY I stopped and switched back to coffee!!! Mixing it w/a cup of coffee would make it even better tho - GREAT idea.

I don't know how coffee affect my weight loss but wouldn't give it up either.

I drink a couple of 16 oz mugs of coffee per day with no problems weight-wise, although I did switch to decaf on the advice of my doctor because she said caffeine might be causing high blood pressure.

Well. I don't about that... but I need my coffee. Of course, I didn't touch the stuff until after his (see pic at left) big sis was born. I was going broke buying cokes at work!

If things don't get moving after dropping the bars, can you cut out the cream in the coffee or not? 1 TBS shouldn't be a problem, but you never know...

I think if I don't see improvement I'll cut back on the HWC. I usually make two mugs a day and use only 1 T in each mug, but like you said, you never know.

Thanks all for the replies--it's good to know I'm not the only coffee addict!

Hi FGF…

I roast all our coffee, and drink it freely.

Even if I found that I could lose faster without it than with - I'd opt to lose a little slower.

I drink it black.

Love my coffee. I think decaf is more dangerous due to the chemicals used.

A treat of coffee with HWC if one doesn't suffer adrenal issues is a great antioxidant source and a special treat for me.

Hi fawn…
Are you aware there is a Swiss Water process of decaffeination which is chemical free?

The beans treated thusly are expensive, but chem free.

I still prefer leaded-premium - no no-lead for me.

I gotta have my coffee. I was drinking unlimited amounts puter day but am working on julia ross diet cure so I am having 1 cup in the morning and then I switch to hot tea. I have been sleeping so much better but it never hindered my weightloss.

Hi FGF…
I don't consider it a vice.

I consider coffee a staple and a treat.

That's the way to look at it! Or, as I call it, nectar of the gods!

If I was having sleeping probs, itsmeshelly, I would eliminate caffeine toot sweet, but I got into a very strict sleep hygiene routine that has defeated my insomnia.
