Does working out too late in the day cause insomnia?

I can't sleep! Could this be b/c I worked out so late in the day? I finally got a workout in around 5 PM. (Forgive me if this is a no-brainer. I'm truly new to this whole 'physical exertion on purpose' concept. )

Went to bed at 10. Took forever to fall asleep. Woke up at 12:30 and here I sit, wide awake at 1:40.

My roommate gets terrible insomnia if we work out in the evening.... me, I am out like a light after a workout. Seems to be an individual thing -- but it can happen.

Tonya..

I've never found it to be a problem.
All of my workouts are done after 5:00 pm and most are done after 7:00.
Last night it was 8:15 before I finished and I was fast asleep by 10:00.

It sounds as if exercise is fairly new to you so that could be the problem. Also, you don't appear to be an old fart like myself. Give it a few years.

I've had that problem, but mainly with cardio. If I put in some serious time after dinner, it takes me longer than usual to settle down for the night. It energizes me, I guess.

It's been a while since I lifted weights, but I don't remember lifting days having the same effect, for what it's worth.

The best you can do is experiment. Change it up for a week or two, see if you like it better.

Exercising releases those awesome feel good energizing thingys.... yea I forgot the name lol.... I have WAY too much energy and feel way too good to even think about sitting down for hours after my workouts.... cant imagine trying to sleep. It's been recommended somewhere by a professional.... again cant recall who or where lol, that you dont exercise at least 3 hours before bed.... I do a morning workout to get me going then I do a weight/resistance workout in the afternoon and finally in the early evening I go for a long walk with my doggie divas.... try to get a nap today!

Well, I finally fell asleep sometime after 4:30 this morning. I managed to sleep fairly well, on the couch, until 8:00. So maybe 5 hours of sleep altogether. I feel fine this morning. I'm not sure if it were the working out or not. But just to be sure I'm going to work out in the morning!

I did have an extremely busy Mon-Wed. I kept my friends children from Mon to late Wed evening. Her 3 plus my 4 made 7 kids in the house ages 2,4,5,7,8,10 and 11. (We both homeschool, so it was all day days.) Then I was running all day Thursday. Maybe my brain was still running on overdrive?

I can do resistance exercise or yoga at night but I need to do cardio earlier.
