Pine Nuts.... anyone else have a side effect?
I tried pine nuts for the first time on friday....... thought they tasted great. I noticed sunday morning that my coffee seemed bitter, and had an after taste. Then everything else I ate that day was bitter, so I just assumed it was some sort of acid reflux. So today everything is still bitter and when I googled "bitter taste in mouth" pine nuts came up.... actually pine mouth came up. who knew??
I've never heard of this in my life. Anyone else? I'd love to know a cure for it, says it may take a week ![]() |

wow, I have never heard of that either, must be some kind of genetic thing that affects only certain people- like smelling cyanide.
I love a couple of pine nuts in a salad and never had a bitter aftertaste. ETA I just googled and see that this is caused by some Chinese varieties of pine nuts. Next time get some nuts from outside of China (like Italy, Spain, etc) and see if it makes a difference. |

I have heard of this! The woman who owns a wine boutique a few blocks away told me that some Pine Nuts will cause an ongoing bitter taste in people's mouths. She had a few customers tell her about it, that is how she knew.
I can't remember which country but there was one specific one where the pine nuts came from that caused this. She said it can last for a week! |

Ugh, hope it gets better soon. I thought my roommate was kidding when she told me about this, but google said otherwise. I thought maybe the stuff I got from Trader Joe's would be okay, but the websites I found seemed to indicate that the stuff from Trader Joe's was specifically problematic. Will have to try to find some European-origin pine nuts at Whole Foods.

I don't have the bitter taste, but my throat gets gummy where I feel like I can't clear it. It's awful!
