Low Carb snack ideas for the plane?

I am bringing along some flavored pork skins, but other than that, I have no idea. Cheese won't really keep, other than perhaps some laughing cow wedges or string cheese. I hate airplane food, and its horrible for us anyway.
Any inventive ideas? I don't want security confiscating anything....

Vodka!

OK, I'm at a loss. But I've gone aboard with snacks and drinks from the terminal before, and nobody said anything. I'm most often on Continental, Aer Lingus, American, or Delta. So I can't speak for other airlines and their policies.

I've recently discovererd Hormel Nitratre free pepperoni and its not refrigerated until you open it. Its comes with two airtight sleeves in the package. And really its not hard to eat one little sleeve. I think the whole package is 3 servings so really eating one sleeve you are getting a little over a serving. Its my go to snack I carry in purse right now.

I fly a lot and take beef jerky and almonds, and sometimes I'll buy the fancy trail mix that has raisins, sunflower seeds, almonds, peanuts that they offer at the airport.

I got a 6 hour flight to Europe coming up and these are some of the things I'm thinking of bringing:

Nuts, especially in the shell so you take your time to eat them.
Beef jerky or a Slim Jim type thing
Atkins bars (if you eat them)
Dried Berries (if you eat them)
LC Snack Crackers (homemade or otherwise, if you eat them)
SF hard candies or chocolate miniature bars (Hersey and Russel Stovers has these)

I always eat well before my flight then bring power bars(I prefer Atkins), nuts, seeds, or beef jerky to snack on if I need.

WOE: Atkins - it's a diet
I always eat before and just have a lot of water with me (bought at airport).

Mini fasting like that also helps to reset the body clock faster so you don't get jet lag if you are changing time zones.

I think this is why I like Atkins so much- I don't have to be strapped to a bag of food all the time because ketosis keeps my hunger at bay.

Nuts, protein shakes in individualized packets are good choices.

Hi Krissy…
I'd request a salad if it's a meal flight.

If not, I'd just bring the same foods/snacks I'd normally eat in that time slot and amount of time. Jerky, string cheese, pepperoni, hard salami, sunflower seeds in shell all work well for me.

I also always carry an iPad/computer and watch movies or read books or otherwise occupy myself (I'm not a sleeper on planes). And I ask for lots of club-soda to keep myself hydrated (I often ask for the whole can).

Have fun!!

I am going to try and stay as on plan as I can when I get there. It's an All Inclusive, so lots of meal choices. I bough some Baja Bob's margarita mix, so that will help. Guacamole, salsa, protein, salads and shrimp are usually pretty available everywhere. Breakfast will be easy, eggs, bacon, coffee. I can't wait!

Don't be scared of cheese being unrefrigerated. You know that delicious sharp cheddar? Aged at room temperature for months! Put it in a ziploc baggy so it doesn't dry out and you'll be just fine.

Personally I would take some pepperoni, cheese and almonds, 4hours isn't long at all. If you're eating right before you get on the plane you shouldn't even get hungry. You might get the "bored" munchies though...

I find sharp cheddar best about 5 hours out of the refrigerator, assuming the temps are mild. it is SO much better then! when we went to Italy one time we ate unrefrigerated Jarlsberg Light for a week with no issues. It got a bit oily, but it was still delicious and didn't mold.

I have been traveling for years on flights over 7 hours. I make hamburger kebobs, keep them in the fridge until we take off. I haven't died yet--nor gotten sick. We also take nuts, peanuts and cheese.

Check with your airline too--nowadays there are a lot more options out there than the usual (veggie meal). We normally fly Delta.

My go-to snack lately has been the small bags of Planters Heat Peanuts. Two or three net carbs per bag and they seem to be very filling. I think the spicy flavor helps to satisfy as well.

Make up your favorite OMM (or 2), let them cool a little, cut them in half and spread each with a smear of cream cheese. Replace the 2 halves and put them in a ziploc baggie.

Have a great trip!

I try to just eat a good meal before I go. I've had cheese and meat taken away on international flights before.

Wow--that's strange. I know you can't bring fresh meat into the States or some other countries, but I've never had it taken before I leave. Did they tell you why the did it--it's not like it's gel or something. Thank goodness, we always eat everything before we land anyway. I have to take meals because sometimes we have 4-9 hour layovers and I won't eat at those expensive airport places.

I'm not sure why. I was flying to hawaii in 2005 and had some pepperoni and cheese strings and they weren't allowed

You will not be allowed to take open meat or cheese into Mexico so be sure not to take with you any more than you can eat on the plane. You won't be allowed to take any fresh fruits or veggies, even celery sticks. They are all fine on the plane, just not good for when you get off.

My last trip to Mexico, they were confiscating ALL dairy, even sealed packages of cheese--not sure if something unusual was going on or not. I never had problems bringing in sealed dairy before!

That is weird that you couldn't take those items to Hawaii Jenny--it's not even an international flight (unless you are outside the USA?)

Yea, that's what I was thinking. She must have gotten one of those TSA guys who have no clue what they're doing. Too bad--hope it wasn't a lot that they took away.

In the future, ask if that rule is in the manual or ask to speak to the manager (and get the name of the TSA agent). Those items are not prohibited.
