How long does cooked chicken stay good in the refrigerator?

I saw on "The Talk" yesterday a lady that was trying help simplify cooking and allow families to have nightly dinners together that are pressed for time. She started on Sunday with putting a whole chicken into a stew pot and making chicken noodle soup. She then boiled extra pasta for the next nights dinner which was Chicken Ziti, etc. She then went on to the rest of the week to show how just cooking that one whole chicken could be used through Saturday.

I never eat leftovers more then 2 days old. Would cooked chicken really last an entire week in just the refrigerator?

IDK....it tastes kinda funky to me after 2 days. I'm pretty picky though. Hubby eats stuff that's a week old. My dad eats stuff a week old too (mom is too picky). Maybe she puts it in the freezer. I brown a bunch of groundbeef to save on time and freeze it in 1 or 2lb packages.

Could be the sauces disguise the icky taste...

If it doesn't last more than 3 days, then your refrigerator isn't cold enough.
If you're still leary of it though, you could make up your recipes in the first couple of days and freeze those meals until you're ready for them.

I hear of people a lot that prepare food on Sunday to last through the week. In the past I've always thrown out leftovers after 3 days but now that I'm preparing things in advance I find that they do last through the week just fine.

But, I agree with the PP. If I know I won't be eating something within the week I'll freeze it and take it out when I need it.

well, if you are storing something like meat, it's good to put it top rear of the refrigerator, the coldest place. lasts much better than the warmest place, bottom door.

it lasts a week. but I think that's stretching it a bit myself.

I don't eat many leftovers after 3 days. I wouldn't eat a chicken that had been in the fridge for a week

If you store it is the back of the fridge, it'll last longer.

In my world, it's good til it's bad. Tends to be pretty obvious w poultry.

When I buy a rotisserie chicken, I make a bunch of different meals from it over the course of about a week. I don't make it a full 7 days, but definitely past 2 or 3 and it doesn't taste any different.

Sometimes I just dip pieces in mayo for lunch, so not really any sauces disguising the taste. Not to mention I usually have a bite or two of just plain chicken when I'm preparing it for something else.

I wouldn't eat any cooked protein after 4 days if it was just refrigerated. She probably froze the rest for whatever prep she was going to do -if she didn't just cook the entire dish and then freeze that.

I sometimes make a week's worth of chicken salad in one go on Sunday night, and it's still good to eat on Friday. Chicken on its own won't taste as fresh, though, and if you don't store it properly, it's much more likely to dry out than go bad on you in a week.

After 72 hours in the fridge, it begins to taste funky to me so I freeze leftover before that time but I have to say, I dislike it once it has been frozen so the dogs get it! They think it tastes great!!!

Oh yes, and longer.

We make sure chicken/turkey/ham/roast are sealed in a good ziplock, or other air tight container, and cooked meats really last a couple weeks.

It's the flavors which invade if poorly stored which are at issue.

When we had 4 boys at home, we used things up more quickly than as empty nesters. But we have used chicken that's 'become' 2 weeks old by the time we use it in several progressive recipes without issues.

We don't want to eat it every day, so we will use what we need, put the rest in the fridge, pull it out a few days later and use some in a salad, then a few days later in a casserole etc.

Raw - a couple days is it for me.

I typically toss it in about 5-7 days. Probably still good but I get a little leary of it.

Unless I know we are going to eat it the next day, I will put it in a storage container, mark it with what it is and the date and freeze it. I am to sidetracked to remember when I cooked what and use it up in time.

On the website Still Tasty you can type in different foods to see how long they last. For a whole cooked chicken it said it's good for 3-4 days in the refrigerator.

i must be pretty gross then because i'll let chicken sit for a few days before i even think to shred and make it into chicken dip or soup...then that sits for a few more days
