Status of Old Threads / Posts

As many of you know, Low Carb Friends has been around for many, many years. Our database had almost 12 million posts and 600,000 threads dating back to 2000. That is an enormous amount of data. A few months ago, we began the process of deleting old posts and threads. Following are some issues we would like to point out:

1. This huge amount of data took up a lot of space on our server and was causing some slowness on the site.

2. Nightly backups of the server were taking longer and longer to finish. Since the LCF site had to be taken offline during backups, this caused the site to be unavailable to members for a longer period of time.

3. Site searches were taking longer to finish.

4. Many posts from several years ago were no longer relevant and contained potentially incorrect information.

5. People post very personal information (despite being cautioned against this). We felt it was best to delete older posts in order to
protect members.

6. Threads were pruned back to anywhere from 1 to 4 years depending on the forum. We saw no reason to keep posts longer than 1 year for the "fun" forums (Playground, Game Room, etc.). Other forums had valuable information so we kept those for a longer period of time.

7. A thread was NOT deleted if it had a post within the 1 - 4 year time frame. In other words, if a thread was created in 2002 and its most recent post was February 3, 2005, then the thread was deleted. However, if a thread was created in 2002 and its most recent post was February 3, 2009, it was NOT deleted.

8. Regardless of the most recent post, NO stickies were deleted. Even if a sticky's most recent post dated back to 2005, it was NOT deleted.

9. There is no way to get those old posts back as they have been completely deleted so please do not ask Admins if there is any way to retrieve older posts. They are gone.

Some of you may be wondering if this maintenance affected your total number of posts. Rest assured ... it did not. We did not re-calculate the posts. In other words, if you've been here since 2000 and had 50,000 posts, your profile still indicates you have 50,000 posts even though your older posts are no longer available.

We realize this may cause some frustration if you have been an LCF member for a long time and are looking for older posts. However, please remember that our intent is to keep this site fresh, fast, and fun. LCF is a wonderful community and home for so many members. We all need to do a little "house cleaning" from time to time.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Well, it's that time again ... time for some LCF "house cleaning". The last time we did it was in the Fall, 2010. Please read the above post for more information and the reasons why we do this.

We will soon begin the process of pruning (deleting) old posts and threads. For the most part, all forums will be pruned back to January, 2009. Exceptions to this will the Off-Topic forums (The Playground, The Lounge, and The Game Room) which will be pruned back to 12-18 months.

In the Weight Loss Journals, we will prune any journals that have not had a recent entry since January, 2009, HOWEVER, we will NOT prune any closed journals.

Regardless of the most recent post, NO stickies will be deleted.

Regardless of the most recent post, NO posts in the Low Carb Recipes and Menus forums will be touched. Recipes are timeless!

As always, our intent is to keep this site fresh, fast, fun, and supportive!

It's time for another round of LCF "house cleaning". The last time we did it was in the Spring, 2012. Please read my original post for more information and the reasons why we do this.

Most forums will be pruned back to January, 2010. Exceptions to this will be the Off-Topic forums (The Playground, The Lounge, and The Game Room) which will be pruned back to 12-18 months.

In the Weight Loss Journals, we will prune any journals that have not had a recent entry since January, 2010, HOWEVER, we will NOT prune any closed journals.

Regardless of the most recent post, NO current stickies will be deleted.

Since recipes are timeless, NO posts in the Lowcarb Recipe Help & Suggestions forum will be touched.

As always, our intent is to keep this site fresh, fast, fun, and supportive!

Very Important Note: In the past, when we pruned old threads/posts, we did not re-calculate members' post counts. In other words, if you've been here since 2000 and had 50,000 posts, your profile would still show that you have 50,000 posts even though your older posts are no longer available. This time, however, WE WILL BE RE-CALCULATING MEMBERS' POSTS COUNTS. Many long-time members will see their post count drop significantly. We understand this may concern some members but it is necessary for site maintenance. We hope you understand.
