Mexican Food

My mother is coming to town tomorrow and she wants to take my family out to dinner to her favorite Mexican Food restaurant. Any suggestions on what I might be able to eat? This is my first south of the border situation since beginning LC, and I don't want to make a mistake that could cost me pounds. I was wondering if fajitas would be ok if I just ate the meat?

Fajitas should be alright just ditch the tortillas , the rice and the beans.

I'd say fajitas as well but ditching the obvious.... or you could do a big taco salad minus the taco shell..or just eat everything but the taco shell. Have them put the sour cream, guacamole on the side.
Same thing with a tostada just dont eat the shell.

Chicken tortilla soup minus the tortilla strips (typically its broth, chicken, green onions, cheese, tomato & tortilla strips)

Chorizo & eggs?

oooh a fajita chicken or steak salad

Have fajitas and make some Spanish rice to go with! If you can get her to try something new, make these enchiladas. They are fantastic and low carb for you, too.

Fajitas are the best option...that or, depending on the place you, if they have a mexican dish (can't remember what it is called) from the yucatan, which is pork cooked in banana leaves...OMG that stuff is MAGIC and LC at the same time.

My favorite LC mexican dish is the shredded beef fajitas. The place we go to also has it a la carte, so you can get it without the beans n rice. I just tell them not to bring me any tortillas with it, and it's soooo yummy!

I always get just the fajitas in Mexican restaurants and ignore the tortillas. One local place has a "fajita salad" on their menu--either chicken, beef, or shrimp--and it's so delicious--just the fajita filling over a big bowl of greens.

Many places have their nutrition information online. Check before you go. Otherwise I would play it safe with a meat dish.

Easy peasy at the TEX/MEX place. Carne Asada, pollo, or camerones, ensalada, ranch dressing on the side, ask for guacamole and sour cream, too.

Eating a soup before the meal is helpful. Place the chip bowl as far away as possible! So addicting.

Our local mexican restaurant has a "Taco Salad Fajita Jalisco" which has beef, chicken and shrimp cooked fajita style with the onion and peppers over lettuce with a tomato slice and sour cream and guacamole. I order it without a shell and no guacamole, can't stand that stuff.

I used to do the mexican rest thing alot....not so much now
I would use a chip to get the salsa to my mouth and then use my lips to remove the salsa and hide the chip under the napkin.... got the salsa and the salt from the chip but not carbs from the chip
I always placed my loaded napkin in the plate after the meal so the other people at near-by tables wouldn't see my used chips

Can't spell my favorite dish let alone pronounce it....but it was the hot sausage bell peppers onions and shrinp in a hot skillet covered with melted cheese...I also added j-peppers to it. Very spicy and fatty! Fills me up everytime!

Quaso fundido or something like that...

I would reccomend fajitas, chicken fajitas, shrimp fajitas or grilled chicken, or a taco salad. Just tell them not to bring you the beans and rice and ask for a big salad instead and if you can order sour cream, salsa and guacamole on the side. Delish!

When we go out it's usually Mexican.

My favorite dish is Diablo shrimp extra hot. I ask for no rice and extra cheese on the beans with sour cream and guacamole, it comes with a small green salad I ask for no dressing. I get a small dish (usually a soda cup lid) with sliced radishes to eat salsa from the salsa bar. I eat a couple bites of beans and ditch the tortillas. I also will order chili verde or chili rellenos sometimes (I know it's made without flour). This meal is really all I need for the whole day other than coffee and tea. My blood glucose numbers are really quite good as well. I stay in ketosis no problem. I wouldn't do it every day but once in a while works for me.

Definitely ask for a pile of lettuce and pico de gallo instead of beans and rice.

Last time I did this, they even put cheese on the lettuce! Nice.

I don't think a Mexican restaurant would use fillers. Fast food places are not restaurants.

We went to Don Diegos last night and I ordered a skinny-rita(yum) and the shrimp chile rellenos. So yummy.very low carb!

I always order naked fajitas (no tortilla, rice or beans) with extra veggies, lots of lime and the hottest salsa possible. I have ordered it so often that I a couple of family members and friends have started ordering them that way too.

I just got home and did pretty well, if I do say so myself! I avoided the tortillas, chips, salsa, rice and beans like a champ! I settled on the Mexican steak...a sirloin grilled to perfection and topped with grilled onions, jalapenos, and bell peppers. Ordered some sour cream and shredded cheese to go on top, and I was in business!

Thanks again for all the suggestions! Now I have a lot to choose from next time I go out to eat!
