Carbs in Romaine Lettuce

I love to make a BIG salad for dinner using a whole head of Romaine lettuce.

BUT ... I just looked it up and a head of Romaine lettuce is 21 carbs !!!

Does this sound right ???

Any info/advice is appreciated ...

Well, it would depend on the head; all heads are not the same size. 1 oz of romaine by weight has about 1 carb and almost the same amount of fiber, so I don't think you'll get fat by eating romaine.

I would weigh the amount you eat and look it up that way. Lettuce kind of balances out because it has some fiber in it. I can't imagine eating enough lettuce to equal 21 carbs. That definitely seems off.

going with the generalization of "head of romaine" I get 20.6 carbs- 13.1g fiber= 7.5g. net carbs

I too agree though, that I always find it better to weigh it out!

A "head" according to my book, equals 14 cups of lettuce. Romaine that is. When you make a salad you may be using just a heart. Measure it by cups when it is chopped. Most of the time I get a salad with maybe 4-5 cups of lettuce, about 4 net carbs.

romaines vary all over the place. you have to weigh your portion to know what you are eating, but everyone knows that much, I'm sure.

I think you were failing to subtract the fiber. If you count total carbs, you basically wouldn't eat vegetables, which would be a pity for so many reasons.

the best number I found looking around the table is only .17 net carbs per ounce. that seems too low to me, but it would definitely be under 1 gram net per ounce.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and tell ya that you can eat to your contentment of romaine lettuce and as long as you don't put a bunch of processed muck on it and make it a 3000calorie salad with hidden carbs and sugars, you're gonna do just fine! Eat away!

Thanks for the replies ...

I'm probably using just the "heart" of the Romaine. I buy the large bags at Costco (about $3.50) for 7 or 8 "heads" ... so, maybe I'm not taking in quite as many carbs as I thought.

It just SHOCKED me when I looked up "carbs in a head of Romaine lettuce" !!!

I'll make sure I don't load up the salad with too many "hidden carb" items ... :-)

I don't think any of us got fat from eating too much romaine lettuce.

2 cups of shredded romaine is about 3.1 carbs.

I love it. We get the one from Sam's and It will last us a week. I don't really add anything most of the time but dressing. Sometimes I get creative and add radish, green pepper, green onion, chopped tomato and bacon but it is so good just plain old lettuce.
