Getting into Ketosis

I seem to have a hard time getting into ketosis.

Even cutting my carbs down to less than 20 a day, I may not show up in ketosis on the sticks, and I don't really lose well unless I am in ketosis.

I know the sticks are not everything...! But I have found that I lose best when the sticks are showing ketones.

I am a diabetic, so I wonder if that has something to do with it (though I am a VERY well controlled diabetic!). I take Metformin 3 times a day.

Any tips or tricks about how to get into ketosis!? I am keeping carbs to less than 20 (net) and fat at 60%, carbs 5% protein 35% (this is approximate. I like to have fat at at LEAST 60%.)

I need tips on how to get the body producing those ketones, and maybe suggestions as to some foods that work well when in induction phase, that I can take with me to work (aka not too much prep and not messy so I can transport them!)

Thanks a bunch!!

It is time to get started on losing the next 50 pounds...! I will get to goal in 2011 (And hopefully sooner than later!)

How long have you been trying to get into ketosis? Use intermittent fasting and vlc - and don't forget, you will be in ketosis long before it shows on the sticks. I haven't been out for a long time but I remember being able to tell by how I felt - so don't ignore that sign too!

I can't get Ketosis to stick personally, I get there and then right back out if I increase my carbs even 5 grams. So going to be watching responses here on this thread.

I am also looking to shed the 50 in 2011!

Today is day four. But that is only this go-round. I achieved ketosis last month for about two weeks, in which I lost at a good rate. But here is the odd thing...my period knocks me right out of ketosis! It is so odd....!!

I know that 4 days is not long. But I have had a hard time hanging onto ketosis for a few months now. I will get in, only to slip out and can't figure out why, really. Although it may be that I am in a milder ketosis and just get so used to the feeling that I don't realize it.

I can tell when I am DEEPLY in...the same cotton mouth, bad breath, stinky pee signs as usual. But like I said, it seems harder for me than for others to get deeply in. I suspect the diabetes. Well, anyhow, I am going vlc right now. I *MAY* have had the pee thing earlier today But nothing on the sticks today. However, I guess I shouldn't complain. Had my monthly visitor until yesterday, so that could account for the ketosis delay!

I'll be watching this thread too...for future reference. Thanks guys. and I'll let you know what happens!!

I get out of ketosis during my TOM too... but then I get whooshed and can lose up to 3 lbs literally overnight. Our bodies are odd... I can go up and down with ketosis even if I eat the same things day in day out. I feel that as long as I am losing consistently...I am good. I find exercising makes me jump back into ketosis most of the time. I think that is why I am having a better journey this time around....

I have this problem too, it takes VLC or the M/E for me to get in the deep purple on the sticks, as soon as i have a yogurt the sticks barely show pink, i don't test the sticks to ofen, but like to once in a while to see where i am at, i usually can tell without doing the sticks

I don't use the sticks. I figure I'm in ketosis when my carbs are fewer than 50/day and I can shop past the bread aisle without cravings.

DH is a diabetic and he has never registered past the second block on the stick. I usally stay next to the last one all the time, really dark. I do think it is because of the medication. He still takes one pill in the morning, eats the same things I do so it almost has to be that. He doesn't cheat because he knows this is not a diet for him.

I know we have all heard this but it bears repeating.. stix are NOT, no way, a good indication of ketosis.. you can be in ketosis and if you don't have excess ketones in your system they won't show on the sticks.. for example you are using all your excess ketones for energy.

The only time I really show very dark on the stick at all is when I am dehydrated a bit.

I know you know this but I just wanted to say it again~ *smile*
