Sugar Alcohols - Good, bad, ok, don't matter?

How are "sugar alcohols" counted towards carbs? I see on some items on Netrition.com that when they calculate sugar alcohols they subtract it from the total of carbs? If I am on a low carb diet should I be worried about these sugar alcohols??

on Atkins, sugar alcohols aren't part of the carb count because they are not completely (or at all, someone remind me?) absorbed into the blood stream and so they don't impact blood sugar. Sugar alcohol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Some products will subtract SA's from the carb count and give you 'net carbs' and some don't. You can use a hidden carb calculator to find out for sure.. Linda's Low Carb Menus & Recipes - Hidden Carb Calculator

Personally, I stay away from them because they give me the most hillariously horrible gas imaginable

I will have a small shot in decaf coffee and whipped cream as a treat once or twice a week. Otherwise I stay away from sugar alcohols altogether. I'm trying to stick to organic meat, fruit, veggies and dairy only.

I try and stay away from them and stay as natural as I can. Sometimes they are unavoidable when you are doing low carb substitutions though. I guess moderation is the key with this situation. I do subtract them along with fiber from the overall carb count.

I use them sparingly, some people are sensitive to them. I have used them just fine. I count the carbs.

Not all sugar alcohols are created equally. Maltitol and lactitol wreak havoc on my innards, and Splenda makes me munchy for more food (plus it tastes gross.) I've found that Erythritol and Xylitol don't have any bad effects or tatses, so I only use those. I don't pay any attentuion to their carbs, and they don't pay any attention to my weight loss!

I eat the Russell Stovers sugar free candy, about 2 pcs a day, and I can not tell that they have a negative effect on my weight loss. If you take the sugar alcohols and fiber from the carb count it leaves about 1 net carb per piece. I started eating them b/c I crave sweets non stop!! These satisfy my cravings and I don't feel deprived. I even bring them places where I know there are going to be other sweets and these help me stay on track. If I couldn't have anything sweet, I would never make it!

They don't bother me.

I sweeten tea with Stevia (Kal brand - tastes best) and have a piece of Russel Stover chocolate every day. I suppose all things in moderation is good advice.

When I first started low carb I ate A LOT of sugar free candy but it only stalled me and continued my carb addiction through "sweet to the taste"

I will use them infrequently. I finally gave up the dessert entitlement and the only sweet taste I get now is from my morning smoothie which contains blueberries and sometimes raspberries.

I don't count anything but I don't indulge in SA's but about once a month or less without consequence.

I must admit I know nothing about sugar alcohols and clearly don't count them one way or the other. Are they naturally occurring or are they just in foods that have them added?

They do not affect me at all .. I lose weight and maintain weight fine with sugar alcohols and all the other artificial sweeteners. I do eat the correct portion sizes though of the foods with sugar alcohol ... and I imagine if I went too high in daily quantity, I (or anyone) would have gastric upset and bathroom issues.

It is in an individual thing .. and you will only know after trying them! Hopefully you are one of the many who can take them.

It's best to ask the poor people around you after having them. If you like being alone, then they're ok.

Al, thanks for the link. So am I getting it right, that I wouldn't be consuming sugar alcohols unless I add them to my food or buy something that has them in it?
