Hair loss?

Anyone experience hair loss on Atkins or very low carb ? I take vitamins but I am noticing my hair thinning quite a bit. I've been doing this WOE now since the beginning of September with a couple of cheat days along the way.

Any type of weight loss can result in hair loss no matter the woe. Very lc can exacerbate this situation in some people with thyroid disease. There are lots of threads here at lcf on this-some take biotin and have success with it.

Cheri and AllieCat, I just started Biotin.

YES! but it's not as bad as others I have read about. My hair is thin naturally so when I am losing weight quickly (on any WOE) it gets even thinner in the front where my hair parts. It looks worse if I let my hair get oily. It's grown back so I am not worried but there is that initial shock...

i have pretty thick hair but it's worrisome seeing so much come out when I wash or brush it.....hopefully things will even out. I'm glad to know its a common thing and I'm not gonna go bald lol

A couple years ago my hair started falling out. I had read about biotin on these boards so I tried it. Worked wonders! A few months ago I noticed that I was reallt losing hair - by the handful!!!! I was still taking the Biotin so I didn't know what to do. After some reasearch I decided to up my protein intake - I just added a post workout protein shake. Two weeks later my hair has completely stopped falling out! And thanks to biotin I can already alot of new growth!!!

Mine fell out in slightly disturbing amounts after a few months on Atkins. It lasted a couple of months, and recently seems to have stopped (fingers crossed!). I didn't do / take anything in particular to prevent it - fortunately it seemed to stop falling out on its own.

Mine also comes out quite a bit when I wash it and/or brush it...its not noticeable when looking at it, only at these times...Being someone with quick weight loss, thyroid issues, and going through menopause, my cards were stacked against me in that area...My endo and my hairdresser recommended biotin as others have stated and it has worked great....good luck

I have definitely noticed this time around that Ive had more hair loss..I have very thick hair so it's not like you can tell its thinning anywhere.. but I cant see it coming out more than it ever was before.. thinking about getting some biotin and upping my protein a little..

My hair stylist raves that my hair and skin are soooo much more healthy. I have a lot of hair and it can get frizzy. I've been lowcarbing since January and every month she tells me my hair is just getting shinier and shinier. Around May/June (5 months in) I did start to "shed" more. That seems to have stopped so maybe it was more weather related than weight related.

I have had a lot of hair loss for a while now. I cannot blame it on eating low carb but after reading about biotin I think that I am going to try it.

I've been VLCing since June...

i've lost 51 pounds...

my hair started coming out much more than usual about a month ago...

I''ve been taking Biotin and Andrew Lessman's hair skin and nail vits for years...

I hope the loss will stop soon.

It's just another incentive for me to get in good shape and stay there...no more of this yo-yo dieting stuff.

The only time I've had something like this go on was after I had my children. There was something about the fluctuating hormone levels. I wonder if that could play a part since our bodies are becoming accustomed to a new WOE.

Staci, me too...after each birth, I too lost a lot of hair...and this hair loss is very much like that.

I'm really not sure what to do...wait it out, or go have bloodwork done.

I had bloodwork done in August and the dr. said my thyroid is "fine"...

My hair was fine until four months on VLCing. My life is sooo much better due to the weight loss...I don't want to change the way I eat...I just hope my hair loss will stop or slow down.

Thanks for the reply!

becky123abc, my hair started falling out after about 4 months, too. It just seemed to stop falling out of it's own accord after another couple of months. Apparently it's quite common with significant weightloss, regardless of the plan followed. Hopefully yours will follow a similar pattern.

I have to say that my hair and skin look almost immediately better when I start low carbing. I love that initial 'look' I get 4-5 days into induction. Probably why I do an induction week every so often.

The way I understand it, by the time your hair starts falling out, it's too late to prevent it but it's already cured. Hair always falls out, randomly, as one stops growing and a new one starts in the same follicle. A sudden shock of any type can make many of them stop growing at once. When new ones start to grow under them, the new ones push the old ones out. So by the time you notice it, the new ones are already growing.

So whatever you do is already about a week late.

You might find this post on Dr. Eades' blog interesting. He's the co-author of Protein Power.

Thank you looweewoo and theredhead...I'm book marking the Eades article.

I don't feel like I've lacked in calories since June...

All I really want to eat is steak and ground beef...and maybe boiled eggs...I make sure to eat any fat attached to the steak...

I do eat a little salad or broccoli if I'm eating out...but don't really care for that.

The more I eat meat, the more I love it!

I feel so great...my energy level and stamina is much higher than it used to be and the hip and joint aches I had before is pretty much gone. I just don't want to lose my hair!

Thank you all for your help.

I know the feeling ! Honestly, I reckon you'll be back to normal in a couple of months. I do sympathise, though, as it's really very alarming to see how much can be left in the shower each morning when it's falling out. Best of luck to you!
