Gross -vs- Net Carbs

Do you all count gross carbs or minus fiber? Which one matters .

Thanks in advance for your input.

Well, I've been back and forth on this. But now that I have to limit my protein and fat a little bit, I'm finding I can eat more carbs for less of a blood sugar effect than either eating low carbs and higher protein and fat.

So I am now netting out fiber again.

I think it is up to you. I know from reading here there are many that use net and many that use total. I have always counted just total carbs. Guess the only time I try and justify using "net" carbs is when I eat mac nuts. The bag I buy has a total of 8 carbs but only 2 net carbs. So, I try and convince myself that they are ok, from time to time, and they are...since they only have 2 "net" carbs.

I've been doing "net carbs" during my entire journey on LC. Sometimes I feel like I'm cheating while doing net carbs - sometimes I don't .

If they're close enough in diference, like 1 to 5 then I will use the item. If it's more then 5 carb difference I stay away from it.

I've never really subtracted for fibre. But I read one of the older versions of the atkins book and back then I don't remember them saying to do that.

Depends on the 'version'. But I deducted nothing.

I lost weigh successfully. So have people who net.

Follow your book - or do whichever is easier.

Me too!!

Subtracting fibre is relatively new to the atkins woe as I recall - it started to become common practice less than 10 yrs. ago.

Fiber ain't carbs for the purposes of low carb eating. The only reason to count it is to give one a "cushion" to make sure the number stays low. If it doesn't get digested as a carb, doesn't raise your blood sugar, and doesn't cause insulin release, it would be sorta not correct to add it in, in my opinion.

Many, however, do need to count most sugar alcohols, with the exception of erythritol and xylitol.

I count both but would go with total carbs vs. net.

BTW - Carbs are not gross.
And people shouldn't be afraid of them. It's the type of carbs that you eat that matter and how much of them.

And thanks for pointing out the last statement. Very helpful!

I subtract everything I can, and have always done this without an issue to my weight loss or maintenance.

Carbs - Fiber - Sugar Alcohol = My Carb Count.

Just what works for me, and not a suggestion for anyone one else.

the problem with sugar alcohol is that depending on the one, some still have usable calories and should be counted, and others that cause a lot of gassy problems could be counted less, but that would depend individually. How can you know from person to person how well they digest.

Erythrito, Xylitol, and Diabetisweet for example still have a calorie count, so technically, the carbs from those calories should be included in the count. We know that 1 cup of splenda is 24 carbs, and liquid splenda is negligible unless you drink the whole bottle at once.

fiber is not caloric, we can't digest it so it doesn't make sense to count it as food calories like carbs, protein and fat. fiber is its own macronutrient but our body doesn't consider it carbs. Now the bacteria in our intestines might but they aren't sharing the energy with us.

Y'know i was wondering about that, whether ****** counts the fiber carbs as calories since it doesn't show in the food breakdown but only at the bottom percentage chart.

When I put in customized food I always wonder if I should just reduce the carbs by the fiber or put in the fiber cause I don't know if it will deduct it out.

I go by net carbs with fruit and veggies. However with low carb bread I count total because I wonder if the count is correct. I have ordered some zero net carb bread (7 carbs and 7 grams of fiber). I plan on counting that bread as 7 carbs a slice.

When I put in customized foods I do enter the fiber manually.

****** does not take out my fiber for me. Showed green beans as having 14g of carbs for 1.5 cups, but 7 of those are fiber.

I take out fiber but count everything else.

I deduct fiber carbs for sure, but sugar alcohols will depend on the alcohol and the circumstances. I love ****** and use the PC version when I need to know what's what.
