2 Cups Lettuce/Salad Greens?

If you count and measure, like me, how do you measure 2 cups of lettuce/salad greens?

Do you break it up and measure that way, or do you chop it small and measure that way, OR do you weight it, like in ounces and if so how many ounces would be 2 cups? I have been "winging" it and I am not sure this is a good thing because I could be eating either under the amount I want or over this way.

Chopped you would get more, I would think but then is that a true measure of 2 cups?

Thanks!!!

When I did Atkins, I measured it chopped (it wasn't finely chopped), loosely packed. It worked great. I found when I measured the salad, I seemed to lose better. Probably just a function of greater scrutiny.

I gave up on cups a long time ago. It just doesn't give you a good measure. I weighed for a while, then decided that 1/4 head of lettuce was close enough.

When I was weighing I did a thing where I figured out how many carbs Atkins was expecting you to get from salad, found out how much weight of lettuce that represented and used that much by weight. I forget the numbers but it was about a quarter of a head...

Honestly I never measure spinach, lettuce, etc. For me, 1 'serving' is a handful, since I have smallish hands, that's just over a cup.

This! (I never measure any of these greens - well, at least, not any more!)

For me, 1 serving of any of these greens Dottie mentioned is "as much as I want to feel satisfied".

I weigh it so I know how many carbs I am having, but I don't limit it. My salads are usually 3-5 ounces of greens by weight.

I don't weigh it. At this point in my journey I figure that right now 1-2 cups of lettuce/spinach is such a long way from the a bag of Doritos and a Dr. Pepper that i could eat 3-4 cups and likely still be OK, considering where I used to be.

I imagine that the closer I get to goal the more attention I will have to spend on weighing and measuring every thing. The last thing I feel I need to do right now is make this harder than it has to be. YMMV

Another vote for a handful = a serving.

you could check on the back of a bag of premixed salad for the carb count and the gram weight per serving

I weigh. But, I'm starting to find that salads might be my downfall (never thought I'd say that). 1/2 bag of greens, a persian cucumber or two, 10 cherry tomatoes and a couple handfuls of sliced mushrooms and I've got a carb-bomb.

This makes me so sad...

generally the listing tells you what they did, like chopped, etc., but it's still extremely variable. In general I go with weighing, but honestly, if it's just lettuce and you are getting it into a cup without packing it hard, I wouldn't stress about it. lettuce is very low so there is wiggle room. but when it's something like cauliflower, the difference between large florets and pureed, at the extreme, is like 6-7 times as much, and there are enough carbs there for it to start to matter. Then I say, if you are really trying to be accurate, weigh it.

I think most people, especially relatively young, never really obese, no history of decades of yoyo dieting, no diabetes or insulin resistance--these people usually have a high enough CCLL that it really won't matter. I think they often count things way too low and think they are doing 20 grams a day, and it's really more like 60 or something, but that's ok, because it works for their bodies anyway.

For those who fall in the groups I mention or otherwise have big trouble losing, we have to be more rigorous, usually.

I totally agree. The lettuce isn't bad, but the minute you start adding on, it adds up so fast. And you didn't even mention dressing!

My downfall is broccoli. *sigh* or sometimes zucchini or mushrooms. it really is sad.

I might have more of an issue with eating 10 cherry tomatoes at one time than the leafy greens parts of the salads. I eat maybe 3-5 at a time of small grape tomatoes usually. Especially in the days that I was eating an 8-12/14oz piece of protein with fats!

I think it's more about how quickly even "healthy" carbs can add up if you're not watching it.
For people with blood sugar issues, too many of any carbs, healthy or not, can be a problem.

I put my bowl on the scale...then add however many ounces of lettuce I want. Then I reset and add tomatoes, reset and add cheese, reset and add cukes, etc. I find it easier to enter the foods into ****** when I can just add them in ounces.

I have a 1cup size measuring cup, I pack salad greens and spinach in there because I'm not chopping it into shreds. The carb count is so low I have 2 cups 2-3 times per day.

Since limiting my dairy, the salad greens are sometimes my only carbs. I keep my carbs well under 20 if the nutrition on the organic packaging is right... On days when I have other veggies like onion, cucumber, or tomato servings, I cut back a little on the salad greens.

I'm losing weight. It works for me, but we're all different so it might not work for the next person.

If one has problems with carbs, they are ALL problematic. Only someone with a pretty healthy carb metabolism can talk like that.

For us diabetics, or people with bad insulin resistance, or others with metabolic issues that make weight loss almost impossible, eating 20 grams of carbs in a salad is a bad idea, no matter what other nutrients they provide!

The good news is that we can get a lot of phytonutrients from very low carb greens, particularly parsley, cilantro, green onion tops, etc.
