If you stick to the plan it shouldn't take more than 2 weeks, but will probably take less. People vary though. Some people take a couple of days, some take about a week. Some take longer.

Eat very clean. Also, the test strips can give false results. Consider physical signs that you may be in Ketosis such as thirst, decreased hunger, bad breath and lots of energy.

The only thing faster than following the plan (Atkins 20 carbs or less) is water fasting. But that only saves you maybe a few hours.

I suspect your strips are inaccurate or you are having hidden carbs. What's your menu like?

Increasing fat helps me get into ketosis pretty quickly. I can get into light ketosis in about 18 hours if I start eating on plan first meal of the day with a good amount of fat. So I would definitely say add more fat.

Adding dietary fat can darken the strips, but that's just color on a strip. Ketosis starts when the reserve glucose is burned and that takes a certain amount of time. Usually you can get into actual ketosis overnight, but to stay in ketosis long enough to start shedding ketones in the urine takes longer. The liver has to release it's reserve and then you will be burning adipose storage fats, which is the ketosis most people really want.

You can't really force it to happen. Just keep your carbs really low and stay away from processed foods. It will happen

I am not a fan of ketosis, but I notice I fall into it quickly with mad cardio exercise and eating low carb/ low cal/ high fat.

I never get the bad breath or thirst, but one key sign that I'm in ketosis for me that I don't see mentioned is that my underarm odor changes.

The only thing a color change on the strips means is that you have ketones in your urine. The only thing that ketones in your urine means is that you are producing ketones that are not being used by your body for energy.

When your body uses fats as an energy source, excess ketones that are not used immediately are wasted. If you are eating cleanly and have been for more than 72 hours your are probably "in ketosis". The strips really don't mean much.

I was going to post this. I can't stand myself - any remedies? My sticks were nice and dark today but I have been on induction two weeks and before today was only showing a trace.

On the standard American diet, most people are so loaded with extra glucose stores that it takes a full three days to enter ketosis using Atkins induction. If you generally eat LC anyway, you can enter ketosis in as little as 18 hours, but more like 48.

After a couple of weeks, your body will begin to make real adjustments to the absence of carbs, and all your digestive and metabolic processes will run better than ever on ketones.

Many people become "keto-adapted" in two or three months, after which ketone strips will not change.

Katrun, if you mean your breath or more body odor...then drink lots more water! That seems to clear up the breath/odor. It'll lessen the purple but that doesn't mean you aren't burning as much fat as before, it just means the water is diluting the color.

Water, water, water...

To lessen the breath and body odor
To flush out more fat faster
To help the skin retain the elasticity as you drop the weight

I can't choke down a lot of plain water so I buy 12 packs of sparkling water at Kroger, $1.99 a 12 pack and it's basically plain club soda in a can. You get the bite of carbonation without any calories or sweeteners.

What is the hurry? Why speed it up? I think we all need to ask ourselves if what we are doing to "hurry" up our weight loss is something that is GOOD for our well being and overall health in the long run.

It's not a race and the weight you want to lose took time to get on, so it's only natural that it's going to take time to get off.

I am not being snarky here, just a concerned LCF who wants to see a newbie be healthy in her WOE.

I agree with beeb. It didn't take a short amount of time to put the weight on... so don't expect to rush in a short amount of time to take the weight off.

Additionally, rather than using the strips, you should just pee on your money and flush it down the toilet. Those things are worthless. The impact of what is or is not directly related to how well you're doing on your eating plan. The only way you can measure that is by being honest with yourself and following a good, healthy, realistic way of eating without cheating yourself.

i agree with everythings that has been said, BUT if you are starting out, or if you are a seasoned veteran at LC those keto strips can really help to assure you that you are doing the right thing, BUT for some people they dont really ever turn purple. i used them years ago but now I know enough to know when I'm in ketosis although I dont have the thirst issues and stuff, but when my appetite is down to nothing and I have a ton of energy, then I'm in

I don't think anyone is speeding into ketosis just because it might lead to faster weight loss. I definitely try to get there as soon as possible because it gives me appetite suppression and let's me get my mind off of the carbs. So I understand the OP not wanting to go weeks without ketosis, especially if it is not necessary.

Are you eating Atkins pre packaged food? If so, that will kick you out of ketosis. You should only be eating meat, cheese, eggs and very little salad for the first few weeks.
