Is dextrose okay?

I've been using packets of 'Stevia in the Raw' in my two cups of decaf every day and it's ingredients are: dextrose and stevia.

Is this what's been stalling me?!?

I couldn't say if it's stalling you, but dextrose is just a form of glucose. It's sugar.

Basically, be suspicious of anything with "ose" on the end. It's usually some kind of sugar.

I'm kicking myself because I knew "ose" was supposed to be bad -- but I got confused when I saw it on this sugar-free sweetener. I thought, "Oh, I must've been wrong and dextrose is okay."

I can't believe they made a Stevia packet with dextrose/sugar in it!?! Stupid me for trusting that since it said "Stevia" it was okay. DUH! (Yes, I'm kicking myself. I feel like I should be wearing an "I'm an idiot." sign today.)

I will stop using it immediately and HOPEFULLY my stall will end. Thanks.

It does seem like a weird combination. Maybe it's for people who want to cut their sugar consumption, but not to the extent us low carbers do.

I have some Splenda and some liquid Stevia. I'll just stick with that.

Hopefully this change will help me see the scale start moving again.

WHY would they put that in a Stevia packet?!? Grrrrrr! I went to their website and this is what it says:

What is dextrose and why is it added to Stevia Extract In The Raw?
Dextrose is a natural carbohydrate derived from corn. Many sugar substitutes in powder form contain dextrose because it is a natural ingredient and does not change the flavor of the sweetener in the blend. In our packet product, dextrose is used to dilute the very potent Rebiana extract to make it measurable for consumers; it does not alter the naturally sweet flavor of the Stevia.

Well, I'm glad I've discovered it. Maybe NOW I'll start losing weight again.

I don't know why it's in there but it's in the splenda packets too. I bought some containers with splenda, a concentrated form, dextrose added

on splenda's web site:
Sucralose, the no-calorie sweetening ingredient in SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener, is about 600 times sweeter than sugar. Like other tabletop sweeteners, the granulated and packet products contain small amounts of carbohydrate (less than 1 gram per serving) for consistent sweetening and to provide volume. These bulking ingredients are dextrose (packets) and maltodextrin (packets and granulated). However, the bulking ingredients provide so few calories per serving that the FDA allows the SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener Products to be labeled no calorie sweeteners, because they provide less than five calories per serving.

Yeah, as the others have said dextrose is a sugar. It's a quickly digested simple sugar. The only time I've seen low-carbers use it post-lifting in their whey shake, otherwise it's usually avoided. It seems odd they'd put it in what's supposed to be a sugar-alternative!

My guess is that they add it to give it bulk so you can measure it like you measure sugar.

I dunno, plenty of people use these products and still get good results. I bought the Stevia in the Raw stuff. I have been using it. I don't use much of it. There really isn't anything else out there. I have used the liquid stuff in the past, but it is so hard to use because it is so concentrated that it is hard to even put in your coffee without making it insanely bitter.

It's still cutting way back from the typical sugar laden diet you might have been consuming before. Before this WOE I'd eat Lucky Charms for breakfast. A little Stevia in the Raw in my coffee can't be worse. KWIM?

True, and if it fits into your carb count you're probably fine. I eat about 30g a day so I have some room in there. I think it's only an issue if it turns out to stall your weight loss.

I've been at the same weight for a month now. I've been stalled since the third week of LC.

I'm hoping dropping it will help. I cook everything I eat from scratch. I'm eating SO clean, I squeak.

Now with that hidden sugar gone -- I either come off the stall or I'm not going to until the endocrinologist adjusts my meds at the end of Sept. (1st avail. appt. for new patients.)

I hope this does it. I don't want to wait almost 2 months to start losing.
