Trader Joe's Low carb bread - help!

I'm trying to slowly lower my husband's carbs to a more moderate range (something like 100-200g per day). I was looking at TJ's for this 4g of net carbs low carb bread everyone speaks of and I can't find it! They have sprouted grains breads (several), they have wheat berry bread, tons of gluten free breads, but I can't find one that's below 12 g of net carbs per SLICE. Can someone please post more details of exactly what this bread is called (or post a pic!). I'd love to beg my store to start carrying it.

Thanks so much!! It's odd we have a bread here called "sprouted wheat bread", but the packaging is slightly different and it's 12g of carbs. Oh well, I'll at least ask my TJ's about it!!

I guess I should ask on as a side note - have any West Coast people found any type of low carb bread (at TJ's or anywhere!)? I know most of us don't eat bread, but sometimes we have family members that do

fyi it is only offered in certain regions...not all trader joe's carry it. i know wisconsin has it.

EDIT doh! i didn't read thoroughly...you already know that...julian's bakery is in california, but they are crazy spensive. i buy a wisconsin based sprouted bread that is very similar to the tj's version...the bakery is called cybros.

I am in CA and my Trader Joes doesn't have it either.

My son eats a Sarah Lee bread that says something about 45 cals on the side that is 6 or so carbs per slice. I can't find it everywhere but it is in some stores here.

I eat a sprouted wheat and flax bread from Alvarado St Bakery (Bay Area I think) that I can find at Raleys/Nob Hill and Whole Foods. At Nob Hill it is usually in the organic section, not with the regular bread.

My DH like LC tortillas pretty well and usually eats his "sandwich" type foods in those. His fave is Mission Carb Balance- the white ones, not the whole wheat. The whole wheat supposedly tastes like "cardboard" in his words.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the tips - I'll have to scour WF and look at Smith's for that Sarah Lee bread. If and when I ever add grains back I'm definitely into the tortilla/flat bread idea - unfortunately my husband has a hardcore addiction to sliced bread I can't seem to break.

I eat the Sara Lees bread and buns. They are very good. TJ's does not have that kind of bread in the west. I guess it a local thing from a local bakery.

I have never seen this type of bread in any of the Whole Foods I have gone to. And believe me, I read EVERY bread label I come across!

There is a Carb Style bread from Pepperridge Farm on the market that is a good stand in when nothing else can be found.

There is also a bread from Aunt Hattie's brand
(Kroger, Safeway, Smiths, Albertsons sell it) The bread is called "net 5" and it has 5 net carbs. Not the greatest texture, feels a little spongy, but has a good taste, and if you are craving a sandwich, it does the trick.

Julian Labels are wrong. sadly.

What is the brand at whole foods?

I have looked at my TJ's (san Jose CA) and they do not have the bread everyone talks about here either.

Unfortunately, that low carb TJ's bread is not sold in the West.

It's baked by a regional baker, and can't be shipped out here.

Alvarado Street Bakery is in Petaluma, CA (South end of town). They use to be in Rohnert Park, just 1 town North of Petaluma. The picture on their website looks like the old Rohnert Park location (not sure why but maybe the building was nicer looking?).

Their story is pretty interesting and their FAQ section is Very interesting. They ship also (6 items minimum, on Mondays only). Their prices look a lot more reasonable than in some stores I've seen. When the Rohnert Park location was going, you could buy from a little store inside the building. I haven't been to the now newer location.

From their location info: "We sell the "irregular" bread loaves at our bakery. Call ahead for the best selection, and directions to the bakery. Thank you!

The TJ's bread is not called lc either-it is Sprouted Whole Wheat Bread. Look for a good sprouted whole wheat bread at your local bakery. The Healthy Life bread is sold at most major grocery chains and is 6 carbs per slice but is a processed bread made with enriched flours not as healthy as a good sprouted whole wheat bread.

Yep. And while there IS a sprouted whole wheat bread available at the west coast Trader Joe's stores, it's a different product made by a different bakery, and has a fairly hefty carb count, something like 13 net carbs, if I recall correctly.

There is one bread I see locally here in SoCal that has pretty good numbers. It's Mahler's California Lifestyle cinnamon walnut with flax and soy. It claims 6 carbs per slice, with 2 grams of fiber, making it 4 grams net per slice. I see it at Henry's and Sprouts, and also at my local international grocery, Wholesome Choice foods. I bought a loaf and had a slice of it toasted with butter last fall, and it tasted great. However, the rest of it remains in my freezer. I'm just too afraid to start eating bread!

The Mahler's bakery is in Oceanside, CA, so it's possible you might be able to find this product in LV. Good luck!

Where at in North Carolina? There's one not far from me in Raleigh in Cary. I don't remember seeing it in there. But then again, it's been quite a while since I've been back there.

I'm about to run to Trader Joe's now and pick up my allotment of the lc sprouted wheat bread.

I am in Vegas, too, and I found a bread at Fresh and Easy that is labeled as being for diabetics. 5 total carbs and 4 grams of fiber. It has a big yellow For Diabetics sticker on it.

It isn's soft and fluffy like regular breads, but toasted or made into something like grilled cheese, it tastes just the same. It is dense, but I still like it!

I'm not positive, but I think TJs sprouted wheat bread IS Alvarado St bread but sold under TJs label. They stopped carrying Alvarado when their own sprouted wheat came out, and DH said TJ's brand tastes the same. We live in Sonoma county so he sometimes buys bread at the Alvarado outlet--he has a point of comparison.

TJs tends to do that. For example, their organic butter seems to be made by Organic Valley. I think they repackage these foods so that they can be sold at lower prices than the brand names. The big exception is the flour. King Arthur put up a big stink when TJ's came out with its own flour in packaging simillar to King Arthur's (back in my bread baking days). King Arthur categorically denied TJ's was using their flour and forced TJ's to change the look of the packaging.

I just found the Sprouted Wheat bread at Trader Joe's yesterday (in the Twin Cities.) It's fantastic and just 4 net carbs a slice. Had a slice this am, toasted with a tsp of reduced sugar strawberry jam and I was in heaven.
