How you know you are in ketosis if you donít have ketosis strips?

Hi, I never know if I am in ketosis or not since I donít have ketosis strips. I am losing weight very slow with crazy ups and downs, mostly because of my water retention.

I am wondering is there are any physical signs of being in ketosis? Is it possible to feel it?

Also, do you think the fact that I retain water indicates that I am not in the ketosis? (I do drink my 1.5 L of water per day).

Thx!

Yes there are ways to tell if you are in ketosis. You may, or may not have any or all of the signs, but here are some signs:

Thirst
metallic or sweet taste in the mouth
bad breath that can be hard to get rid of
stronger smelling urine
stronger body odor
best of all.....lack of appetite

I know I am in ketosis by the absolute fact that I have not eaten enough carbs to fall out of ketosis. I know that sounds odd or unhelpful, but it's really my best indicator.

As long as I am under 10-20 carbs, I KNOW I am in ketosis. But to know I have only eaten those carbs, my diet has to be clean, whole, self prepared foods only.

Thanks for your replies. I am not sure how many carbs I eat, I don’t count, just completely eliminated all kind of sugar, flower, potato, carrot, beans, milk and yogurt and start running once a week and walking for an hour every day…so far it’s working, even though I didn’t give up my glass of “Merlot” with dinner. Lately I am just thinking maybe if I will know what is feels to be in ketosis I can figure out how to get in it / stay longer in it and be finally done with my last few pounds.

From what you guys described, I don’t think I ever been in ketosis, I am always hungry and I didn’t notice any issues with smell ….so is it possible to lose weight and do not be in ketosis at all?

Everyone goes into ketosis every night (unless they carb up before bed) and you can be in ketosis without showing any external symptoms. The release of fat comes with ketones and if you are losing fat, you are spending some amount of time in ketosis.

You only have a small amount to lose so you may not ever have to deal with the amount of extra ketones that show up in the urine and breath.

I just want to add that I had NONE of these symptoms, but I was still in ketosis.

If I am eating on plan, and feeling "light" (you know, the concave stomach feeling), I know I am in ketosis.

Bottomline, if I am losing weight/inches however slow, I know I am in ketosis.

I've never had any of the stinky side effects but have indeed managed to stay in ketosis throughout my woe even on the days I went over my 30 net limit. I test every other day in the evening just to check. I'm losing, if not weight then inches so this also tells me I am doing something right

My symptoms are the slightly sweet taste in my mouth. This is usually around the back sides of the tounge. Then it is usually followed by the smelly urine. Mine smells like tuna fish. but it can vary. I have the strips and bought them from the pharmacist.

For me I can tell by urine odor. It has a slight acetone odor to it in ketosis I have noticed. I don't notice bad breath or B.O. or other issues in ketosis (though maybe people near me do? haha). If you're not familiar with acetone odor, it's often in nail polish (the unscented type would be the closest reference) and often used in auto body repair work, etc.

I am a keto-strip addict. I keep them at home in my bathroom and test each morning, every evening when I get home, and then last before I go to bed. I bought my last two boxes at WalMart in the pharmacy section.

When I'm in ketosis, I feel like I MUST be constantly sipping on ice water. I hope it keeps the smell down.

Yes, it is possible.

If you are always hungry, something is not right. Are you eating enough fat? And enough food?

When I first went into ketosis around the 3rd day mark of this WOE, I noticed a huge increase in energy. I just wanted to get up and move and be productive. It even caused some occasional insomnia as well.

I also had the "stinky" symptoms too. The odor of my sweat when working out changed, the odor of my urine changed, and I'd wake up in the morning with an odd taste in my mouth that was different from my usual "morning breath".

This is me too! There is something so comforting about it. Odd after all this time but it is what it is.

I'm not an expert but I would add more protein/fat into your breakfast. When I eat a good breakfast it fills me up for the whole day.

This looks more like a low fat/low calorie diet. Is that what you are doing?

Nope, I am following Atkins like approach. I donít count carbs, just completely eliminated any sugar, flower, potato, corn.

I guess I am not doing it correct, ha? Do I have too little fat or too little protein?

Well, you don't have much to lose but to do it "Atkins like" you should count carbs. Without measurements I couldn't say with certainty if you are eating below your Carb Limit.

Looking at what you posted I would have to guess that you are too low on Fats, too high on Carbs, and too low in calories. Protein is probably just fine. Switch out that turkey for a big piece of dark meat chicken with butter and switch out the salmon for a fatty cut of beef. Then make your salads more about greens and less about cucumbers and tomatoes.

Thanks for advice! I actually decided to count carbs for a week, starting Mon and stay with 20 g / day and see if that will help me start losing better!

I do not think the problem is too much carbs (although it may be some more than 20), rather too little protein and fat. That is why you are hungry. You should have a proper source of protein&fat on every meal, the salad and stuff are less important. Eat a steak! And eggs! And what kind of a meal is a slice of cheese or turkey. Sounds sad.

Sorry, but this does not remotely sound Atkins like. I am not saying you ought to do Atkins...but if you would like to do it, I would suggest reading the book or researching the info online. It will be a huge help keeping you on track.
