GREAT (sarcastic) since I have BAD ASTHMA eating FAT & ASTHMA

"Researchers say this is the first study that shows that high-fat meals increase airway inflammation. Results showed that the high-fat meals suppressed the effectiveness of the asthma medication for three to four hours.
Asthma has increased dramatically in western countries in recent decades, suggesting that environmental
new study suggests asthma patients should avoid high-fat meals because such foods may inflame airways.
Australian researchers conducted the study with 40 asthma patients. Some received a high-fat, high-calorie meal of fast food hamburgers and hash browns. The meals contained about 1,000 calories, 52 percent of which was fat.
Other asthma patients ate low-fat, low-calorie meals of reduced fat yogurt, containing about 200 calories and 13 percent fat. "

But this is wrong. If they truly gave one group a high fat meal WITHOUT the obvious carbs, then the study might be worth something.....I hate how a meal that is high fat also includes highly refined carbs - don't these researches read anything?????

As always....blame the fat rather than looking at the big picture.

Carbs are an inflammatory, not fat.

Jacki-

If you have bad asthma, you might want to take a look at JUDDD (we have a thread under "Other Plans") because the major scientific study of this plan is that for some reason it improves asthma.

One of the women on our thread has emphysema, and she reduced her meds by doing JUDDD.

It's a radical approach to calorie restriction, but it can be done low carb (as I do it). I'm not advocating it, but I wanted to mention the asthma connection to you in case you're interested.

All fats are not created equal!

For proper function, the airspaces of the lungs have to be coated with a thin layer of lung surfactant. The fat content of lung surfactant is 100 percent saturated fatty acids. Replacement of these critical fats by other types of fat makes faulty surfactant and potentially causes breathing difficulties.

Now that is very interesting! Can it be reversed?

Just to add my 2 cents- I have had asthma for many many years- since childhood. for 20 years I was on a daily steroid and needed my rescue inhaler at least once a week- worse during allergy seasons. I also couldn't run -ever-even preloading without my heart feeling like it was going to jump out of my chest.
I've been low carbing since Jan 09- The only time I ever need /use an inhaler is one puff of ventolin before I get on my treadmill. no steroid - nothing else.-as well I can run far better -often my legs give out before my lungs- still not saying much I only do 3 miles .
and yes- I eat fat but I stay away from processed foods.

Vegetable oils are the worst thing for the surfactant layer of the lung. Saturated fat is the best protector as well as omega 3 fatty acids. A great natural anti-oxidant for the lung is N-Acetyl Cysteine.

That was a garbage study. Use real food people not vegetable oil laden fast foods! and yes the carbs but I believe that to be secondary knowing how the surfactant layer works.

The best things again, for lung health:

Cod Liver Oil (The DHA omega 3 as well, the retinol form of Vitamin A)
N-Acetyl Cysteine @600mg daily
And as Enig has stated, coconut oil is superior for cellular health

If that was true, my asthma would be full-blown right now! Fact is, I rarely have any of my asthma symptoms when truly doing LC. It's adding wheat flour back into the mix that get me to have a flare-up. I've gone from needing my inhaler on a regular basis, to almost not ever needing it. I'll buy one, use it once or twice, and by the time I need it again, it has expired. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

No flour for me But I use 2 inhalers per month PLUS at least 100 vials for my machine + singulair and advair

so I should be taking the above or just the N-acetyl
I do have CO but don't use it often and I use butter or bacon fat for everything
