Anyone here actually done the "Fat Fast" by Atkins to break a stall?

Just wondering about your experiences...considering this for getting back on track and to see if it can "jump start" my weight loss

Many years ago, I did this for 3 days and it worked (I was not in a real stall though). I just don't feel the need so far although I have had a 44 day stall. But is broke for no apparent reason.

I did it in February for about three weeks, and was thrilled with the results. But it leveled out once I upped my protein a bit to avoid losing muscle mass; I had some very long plateaus without any loss. Over the period since Jan 1, I think I didn't lose any more weight than if I hadn't done the fat fast. I was disappointed.

I was considering it cause i couldnt get the scale or inches to budge
but then i dropped bacon and sausages and lost a pound. i dont know if they
caused me to stall due to the sodium but i guess im not in a stall no more.
Im glad cause after 3 months and only 10 pound loss i was wondering if i was
on the eating plan.good luck with your fast if you decide to go with it.

*sigh* I can't do it.

macadamia nuts are a huge trigger for me

If someone came to my house and divied them out to me, and then left with them, I could do it

kristina, I don't think there's any need to eat macadamia nuts. The point is just 1000 calories, 80-90% fat, right?

I find macadamias difficult too.

When I was close to goal weight last time, I'd do a few days fat fast to break up the monotony. I made it simple. I brick of cream cheese one day, 1000 calories of macs another. I worked 12+ hours a day then and it was easy for me to follow. I used to do Stillman's too for a few days of quick thigh fat loss. I don't know why but 2 HB eggs, a can of tuna, and a chicken breast a day made my thighs shrink fast.

kristina, if you were at home you could make it the whipped cream diet... whip up 1/4 cup of heavy whipping cream and drip in a little liquid sucralose and perhaps a little carb free flavoring.

That would be 1028 calories, 992 from fat. It would get old fast, but it would be fun for one day! LOL

I, did it like Cathy, many years ago. It more than likely was not a real stall . But it was interesting to find out how my body responded to this. If I remember correctlly I didn't lose weight after 3 days. But I started losing after. what I remember was I ate mostly protein salads with tons of mayo and macadamia nuts.

Yes, a few times I got off track while doing the OWL part of Atkins. Each time I did (which was rare) I would do a 3 day FF and it would get me back on track and I would drop the weight I had added during my cheat. Generally, the cheat was planned on a weekend and it gave me an opportunity to endulge in a few things I just felt like I had to have. I eat primarily Macadamia Nuts and Fage Full Fat Yogurt.

it works but you should not do it for more than three days.

when I have done it i used cream cheese for my 1000 cals per day or really high fat double cream brie cheese.

expect to lose like 3 LBS day 1, 2 LBS day 2, 1 LB day 3...
and then i didn't lose anymore.

yes, I ate a lot of brie.

I think I lost 3 lb in 4-5 days, but that was a huge amount for me at that point.

thanks for posting Lc'ers. I am glad to hear folks were able to stick to the diet for 3 days successfully. If this post Induction stall doesn't get moving, I am gonna do the FF next.

Yes, and it didn't work. My issue was my thyroid not the plan or eating too much food.

Out of curiosity, how does one choke down a block of cream cheese?? did you whip it up or add some flavoring or sweetener to it?? I wonder if you could just eat cream cheese clouds all day... yum!! I've considered the FF but have never actually done it.

well you eat it in 100 calorie incriments so its just like a slice of cream cheese which i find delicious.

the fat fast is brutal and is not meant for breaking stalls but hey if you try it and it doesn't work i'd say thats proof there's something medically wrong!

I did it for three days (tried for four) and I lost 5.5 pounds in that time. I only ate macadamia nuts, and towards the end I got so tired of macadamia nuts i went completely off plan. This was... middle of marchish. Its taken me till Monday to get FULLY back on plan. And even now I still find myself reaching for carbs. It caused a huuuuge binge for me. So make sure you're ok with that possibility, or confident in yourself to get back on. I wasn't, and am not, so I doubt I'll do it again. But man that was a great couple of days to see those drops! Not worth it for me, though.

First of all

Seriously? I guess I would try to fry that sucker in butter and then choke it down...

i bought the new bood and all they say about metobolic resistance or stall is wait it out. i feel sorry for the people who need the information about the fat fast and its not there. i am a slow loser and a fast gainer ( lost 1 lb during a one meal fast for lent and gained 9 for eating easter dinner with dessert...water you say i started induction again and 3 weeks later i lost 2 of the 9 i gained) so i need a fat fast to lose and maintain with low carb. i am now trying a modified fat fast eating fat meal for breakfast and lunch and a normal low carb meal for dinner. i will let you know how it goes next week when i weigh in.

DANDR says if you stall (1 month with no weight or inches lost) to try the Fat Fast. He also suggests doing a food inventory to be sure you aren't unintentionally eating carbs. Lots of folks have had success doing egg fasts as well if you can't choke down a block of cream cheese and mac nuts for a few days...

I did the fat fast for 3 days the last time I did Atkin's, I lost about 5 lbs, and after I went back to normal induction levels I usually gained back a lb. or 2. It does work, but it's hard to stick to for too long. I also found I felt restricted and like I was "dieting" and that things like the fat fast and stillman's were triggers for me falling off the wagon completely, so I wouldn't do it again this time.

I was wondering if you would have a backlash weight gain after doing this. Dang. Guess I better look into that whale blubber diet instead (I'm joking)

just wondering- can you add low cal/carb veggies- say cucumber slices to eat with your cream cheese. I have NANY- so none of the wonderful fat fast info of DANDR. My thinking is that carbs would be naturally very low- so would the extra carbs form veggies mess it up?

technically no you cannot eat ANYTHING except exactly what is in the fast.

I think I might hold off till I've stalled out completely- as in 4 weeks no loss, no inches lost. That is quite the commitment that I don't think I can make right now- as frustrating as slow losing is.

Thanks for the info!

When I used to be active in the asdl-c newsgroup years ago, many people tried this, but it didn't seem to be useful.

The point of it would be to put someone into ketosis and it would only help if they were eating a lot more carbs than they thought. The version of Atkins with the fat fast was written back in the days when it was much harder to get accurate carb counts and most people weren't online.

But if you are in ketosis, it probably won't do much. It turns out there is no such thing as "fat mobilizing substance" that was based on outdated research and the story about the guy losing all the weight with the extremely high calorie fat diet is suspect too.

Bottom line: there are no quick fixes or miracle cures. For most of us a successful diet is about cutting down all kinds of things until you see results and sticking with very small improvements for a very long time.

If you're really stalled, eat less food. For a while. If that doesn't help, find a good endocrinologist and find out what is blocking the weight loss.
