Dealing with the Stinky Smell of Ketosis

I'm wondering how people are coping with the stinky smell of ketosis. I'm on a ketogenic low-carb diet -- usually 60g of net carbs or less. I've tested myself with ketostix several times and I can smell the rancid urine smell.

The problem here is that my toilet doesn't seem to flush completely and the ketogenic smell stays in the bathroom and even leaks to the living room. My super came in to my apartment and asked what that smell is.

I've been using Lysol before I leave to freshen up but that doesn't seem to be enough. Now, I'm using air fresheners, fragrance refills, and toilet bowl cleaners but I can still smell it when I enter my apartment.

How do people deal with this ketogenic smell? It's good that I'm ketogenic. But I can do without the smell.

Huh... keep the vent fan on? Flush twice? Install a new toilet?

The smell is acetone... is there any chemical that will neutralize that safely?

I hope you realize that your urine is not the only way that this odor leaves your body. But at 60 carbs your ketosis smell is probably not as bad as you think.

I would personally rather smell ketosis than "air fresheners" but now that the weather is nicer in your area maybe some open windows would help. A small amount of Clorox will clean your toilet as clean as it's going to get as far as actual urine smell.

ETA: I just thought that maybe there is another problem with your commode. Sometimes the wax seal at the bottom starts to leak and that can leave a smell even when you can't see the actual leak. See if your toilet wiggles or if there is a tiny ring of stain around the base.

wow the only time I ever had that strong of a smell was when I was eating close to zero carbs and found that I was eating meats that were too lean.

I agree with the wax seal

What's puzzling is, yes, I'm doing about 65 net carbs ... my total carb consumption is really about 100g per day. I consume about 35g of fiber. So I should really be on the edge of being ketogenic, yet I seem to be constantly in that state, ever since 5 months ago when I went on a low-carb diet. My last urinalysis found ketones in my urine, which alarmed my PCP but I had to relax him, saying I'm low-carbing by choice to treat T2 diabetes. Notice here that I'm on a moderately low-carb diet, not really low, low-carb. I don't have a problem with my breath.

It's just the urine smell and I drink plenty of water (15 cups) during the day, which forces me to go to the bathroom constantly (one trip for every cup that I drink). And the smell is unmistakably the stinky ketogenic smell. If I'm home using the bathroom 15 times a day, then the bathroom basically reeks. My super thinks I'm not flushing my toilet. I flush it twice every time I use it.

Then something else is happening. There is another problem that you haven't found. If you keep looking you will find it. Do you have a pilot light out? The new propane odor smells more like urine to me.

I want stinky pee! You sure it is the Ketosis. Are you male or female. Maybe something else is going on?

I'm male. I've been low-carbing for 5 months and lost 45 lbs. in that span. I'm wondering whether this is due to some other physical condition I may suffer from. Or maybe it's just the mechanical problem with the toilet. I hate my super thinking that I'm deliberately not flushing the toilet for some unknown reason -- he'll never understand ketosis.

men can get bladder infections too. Please go to the doctor. It may not be the ketosis.

you super complained to you? you should complain to your super that your toliet isn't flushing properly. that being said, the more water i drink, the less i smell it, but it still stinks to me too. i wonder if that no odor stuff works. i think i'll look it up too.

It's got to be something other than urine in the toilet bowl.
