Horrible Dinner

I was invited over to a friends house for dinner this evening, she usually cooks a meat and two veggies so I figured I'd be safe...get there and it's spaghetti and garlic bread!!!! I couldn't be rude, so I ate just a very small portion and skipped the bread. She questions me as to why I'm not eating very much and I tell her I'm trying to watch my carb intake and have cut back on my carbs.....(she's an RN) and says, "smart move....hope you don't get a heart attack!" I'm shocked and tell her I don't appreciate her comment, and her response, "low carb is not good at all, you're just asking for serious health problems, just warning ya...by the way I've lost 16lbs and I don't do low carb!" I'm at a loss for words....guess I just needed to vent! I mean I've been LC for a week now and can tell a MAJOR difference in so many things, and lost 5lbs, just don't appreciate the negative comments....am I wrong here?

I have found that most of the medical field is clueless. Next time, if she invites you again, ask her what she plans on making. If it is a carby meal, offer to cook at your house instead. And if she starts about the low carb issue, I would take the high road. Explain that you find this WOE working for you and that you would appreciate it if she was supportive, even if she didn't agree with your WOE. If she is not, she is really not a friend anyway. Then I would find a new friend!!

Do not, do not, do not let peer pressure decide what diet plan you should be on.

If she brings up health risks again, tell her you'll talk about it after she reads DANDR or GCBC.

Hi asugirl…
When people question my food choices I just say ''I don't eat starches or sugars...'' and never mention Low Carb. And I immediately turn the conversation back to ''life''. I also learned a long time ago to show up with a broccoli salad or hot-n-sweet chicken slaw under my arm when we go to friend's houses to eat...

And sometimes a container with hulled strawberries, and grapes and perhaps some berries. And a half or quarter round of cheese with a slicer...that way there is always something for me.

If they want to push it, I just steer the conversation back to life.

I've sat with people and we have talked about their kids, cats, work, dogs and life while I've stripped pizza, de-bunned burgers or fished the croutons out of my salads - all without them seemingly noticing. Food is not my focus, so I don't allow it to be theirs either.

I just keep the attention on them, and ask them questions about how they are doing (because I genuinely care) and don't-never discuss my low carb outside of this group (except an occasional remark or two with my wife).

Well - my doc knows...and he's ok with it.

I totally agree with Larry! I also never mention low carb and have also never had anyone notice what or how I'm eating. If asked, I say that I don't eat sugar or starch, and people usually shut up then, assuming that I'm diabetic or have another medical issue.

However, I find your 'friend's' comments to be rude--and hostile.

Please don't worry about the 'health' issues she ignorantly raised. I have a good friend who is an RN (and tiny) who never cared about diets, since she didn't need one. But her husband put on a lot of weight, and she advised him to do Atkins because the overweight doctors in her hospital were all on Atkins and losing very well. So did her husband!

I am "stealing" 2 of Larry's ideas:
1. Say that "I don't eat sugars or starches"
2. Bringing a dish to pass

Great ideas!

Always ask what is being served when you go somewhere for dinner. You would be surprised what some people consider 'low carb'. My mom invited us over for dinner last summer, knowing I was eating low carb and promised me it would be stuff I could eat. yeah, she made a roast with potatos and carrots, had a salad with french dressing and got 'skinny cow' low fat ice cream treats for dessert. I ate roast with plain salad and we got into an argument over the ice cream treats. Sigh, now I go over everything with her before I agree to eat dinner, or we just go out. Its your life, nobody has the right to make you do anything you don't want to. Its not rude to refuse to eat unhealthy food. If someone offered you drugs you wouldn't just 'do it' so as not to be rude, and sugar and starches are a 'type' of drug in a way. I have a terrible carb/sugar addiction and I refuse to feed it. Do what is best for you, and you can't go wrong.

I sometimes refer to my WOE as the non white foods WOE that Dr. Gott published. For those that don't know the name he is a doctor that writes a column for newpapers. Our local has carried it for years. Normally good reading on all kind of subjects. Anyway, he supports a non-white way of eating. No breads, sugar, flour, pasta and etc. Very close to Atkins. So, when I know I am in the presence of potential bad conversation I just bail out and say, as Larry said above, that I have cut back on starches and sugars. I never get any bad comments about this.
Then sometimes, especially in the presence of someone that needs to drop some pounds, I hit them with the hard facts of my LC WOE. Kinda hard to argue my (our ) success stories.

I am so sorry you had to deal with that asugurl and she obviously is someone you are close with, but Larry's advice is the best advice I have seen written out like that ... I do my best to just make it a non-issue -- obviously you went to dinner and that was what she was serving and well, the conversation was inevitable under those circumstances. My relationship with others is about shared common experiences and "life" and that is what I share with others. My woe is my business alone unless they choose to be interested and supportive ..

As others have said, lead by example ... you will have the weightloss and eventually the bloodwork to prove how very right you are. I know that no one in my life would dare tell me that my heart is going to explode when I have lost all this weight, look 10 years younger than my age and can move around like a child .... Just bide your time .... and know that you don't really have to convert anyone else, or get their acceptance even. This is about you!

I would, however, complain to the high heavens about your friend here on the boards, lol!! I find my journal is a really great place to rant about IRL people and make myself feel better.

You are doing great!!!!

Thank goodness I don't fall into the "most healthcare workers" idea of the Food Pyramid. I too am an RN and disagree whole heartedly with the Gov'ts Pyramid and what the ADA (American Dietetic Assoc.) teaches Dieticians these days. In fact, I was reading an article about breast cancer and how being overweight and insulin resistence increases risk. Hasn't breast cancer increase too since the 80s and the introduction of low fat high carb????? Hmmm, people, why can't you get the connection.

Alot of older nurses just don't get LC. Even my nursing instructor, in class, said that LC will cause renal damage. *insert eye roll here*
The only one I really talk about LC with, is my BFF. She's doing zero carbs herself.

People do get the connection as demonstrated on these boards, it's the "party line mainstream proponents" whom are blind and ignorant to the reality of facts abound. Fueled directly with personal monetary interests at heart, these groups ie, Big Pharma's 500 plus million in contributions to the AMA each yr., are the source of this continuing madness.

YEP - I never show up without something I CAN EAT and I will share!

I don't discuss it either - UNLESS someone is sincerely interested. But, I refuse to allow them to bash the way I eat - I duck and dodge. I don't eat sugar - and I watch my starches - "makes me feel better and my DOC is happy"....done.

For future reference, the correct response is:

"Thank you for dinner" and then get up and leave.

If she asks about it later, you can have a civil conversation. You can truthfully explain that you left abruptly because you didn't want to say anything out of anger.

It is so disheartening when a good friend or relative disses your attempts to be healthy. Be assured, it is always ignorance speaking. I remind myself that I used to believe the same thing. It sometimes feels like I am swimming upstream!
Make a rule for yourself to always bring something - anything (an appetizer for example) that you can eat.
You did the right thing btw, by eating a small portion and leaving out the bread. It must have been difficult....

Saying 'I've elimated sugar, processed foods and junk foods from my diet' seems to me to be a perfect answer!

How many people can argue with THAT statement? No matter what 'diet' they might believe in..almost ALL of them believe in elimating those foods. Or, like others have said 'eliminating WHITE foods' works too.

The only real difference between Atkins and most of the 'other' healthy diets is the amount of fat, protein and 'good carbs' that we eat.

So so sorry but I had to laugh at his name - "Gott" = "God" in German... "Dr. God" ... too perfect for a doctor Sorry no offense to anyone intended...

Ahem, back to topic - Larry and TaDa had such excellent posts, I won't beat a dead horse and say what they've already said so well. Only to add that way of eating/dieting/call it what you will is much like religion and politics - it's highly emotional and very seldom seen through eyes of logic. No one's going to give up their camp as it's very personal. So that's how I approach LC now - I only discuss with those I know are on "my side." Not that I mean to imply there are "sides" but... I hope you get what I'm getting at. And while it's admirable to be a LC crusader sometimes it's ok to avoid it altogether and make your own life easier

But many It hurts to get such venom from someone you trust Bust out your thick skin for awhile and bide your time - pretty soon you'll be a living breathing example of why LC IS so great.

My thoughts exactly. I hope she is a good friend, but she sounds like an insensitive person. If my friend said that, I would just leave because she is technically being very sarcastic to your choices and you don't need friends like that. My sister learned that quick and shut up to my WOE. LOL

I am like Larry and just turn the questions back to them. If someone is really interested in learning of course I will loan out my books and share what I have found I like about this way of eating. Other than that I just smile and nod if someone says something dumb about LC. And yes just like Larry I will talk to my spouse about people who do not understand LC....

I don't talk about it, either. I just don't want to hear the silly crap that people say.

BUT...it's kind of dispicable of us not to defend a way-of-eating that has saved our lives, isn't it?
