Why am I craving beef!

Am I missing something in my diet. About 4 days ago I had a big yummy steak. I thought that would do it. The next day I had basically ground hamburger all day. Last night we went out to eat and I had a big ole ribeye with broccoli. Yummy. Today I have pork chops thawing in the fridge for tonight but the only thing that sounds good is another steak :-) I looked at the steak prices last night and decided against buying any more for a while.

Hi tom's wife…
You are craving it because it's tasty?

I see no problem with craving beef...

I hope somebody with some knowledge chimes in, but I thought I read somewhere that low iron sometimes causes beef cravings. Anybody know for sure????

I know for me, when it's TOM, I really get beef cravings. And if I take a pill with some extra iron in it, within a couple of days the beef cravings go away. So I just kind of assumed it had something to do with low iron.

Number one, because it is delicious! Number two, yup, I'd guess low iron levels, too.

i'm thinking iron levels too! i ALWAYS give in to what my body is asking me for (low carb choices of course) and i find, my body is always asking me for the "right" kinds of things

sometimes i will go on "broccoli binges" where i can eat it (loaded of course!) for meals for days and i eat a nearly vegitarian diet and other days (such as lately) i eat nearly all meat!

if steak is out of your budget, go have some big juicy cheeseburgers!

Yes, this is what I first thought too!

But I have heard the iron theory before too. Not sure if it's just an old wive's tail or has been scientifically proven though?

Be happy that it's an on-plan food! I say eat all the beef you can buy, it's probably something to do with the nutrients in it (lots of iron, magnesium, b12, folic acid) or you just require more protein right now. If it continues get a blood panel to see if you are deficient in anything.

I always submit to the good things that my body desires. Cupcakes on the other hand...

If your craving beef it is likely low iron but it could also be the protein and can be satisfied by eating chicken or fish.

Thanks, guys. I like the prescription of eating more beef :-) I can't imagine being low on iron and I really don't want to take a suppliment. So I'm off to thaw a bunch of hamburger and I'll be watching the sales for steak.

Before my hysterectomy, I wanted a whole side of beef for days before and during TOM. My kids thought I was absolutely nuts for eating steak, cooking prime rib in the summer, hamburgers, but mainly RARE steak.... it was an iron thing for me.

I can think of worse things to crave. I was thinking either you need or iron or TOM also.

I either crave beef or just veggies. All other meats I eat are just to add "diversity".

My mum always makes me a beef dinner on return from university as it's my favourite. She's alright sometimes.

Beef has an excellent ratio of fat to protein-even if trimmed.
Perhaps you are craving beef because your body really wants the fat?
Don't sweat it, though, just eat it if you want it-it's good for you!
I eat mostly beef-more than anything else!
