Meat and egg fast??

Is it okay to have mayo if you're doing this fast? I mean, it's made of eggs, so...

What about butter?

I hope someone will correct me if needed, but there are so many versions of the meat and egg diet, whose to say what isn't allowed.

Years ago, "She whose name shall not be spoken" called for lean meats, eggs, touch of butter for cooking, and nothing else. They called it The meat and egg diet..

Others say any meat, any cut, any amount of fat, eggs, season to taste, no condiments, sauces, or dairy. They called it The meat and egg diet...

Here's the way I'm doing it:
Any meat (fat on the meat OK), eggs, limited mayo/mustard for chicken or tuna salad, seasonings. Right now I'm trying to do this Monday through Friday lunch, and I'm eating a few salads and a little dairy on the weekends.

I wouldn't limit anything that's pure fat. To me, those things are self-limiting. Unless you are the type to eat 1/2 c mayo or a stick of butter at a sitting, eat to enjoyment. YMMV.

Are you talking about the fat fast in DANDR? Or is this different? I get confused...

In the book, the fat fast includes mayo, but doesn't mention butter. It mentions heavy cream though so don't see why butter would be much different.

Nah. I guess it's not technically a fast. I'm just pretty much not going to eat anything but meat & eggs this week. I've been dipping my meats in some mayo. I've had some heavy cream. Melted some butter over some pork.

That kind of thing.

I guess it was a stupid question! Since there isn't a particular specific "fast" I'm following!

So. Um. Carry on! Move it along! Nothing to see here!

I was on an egg protein fat fast over a year ago.

I used mayo, olive oil, and avocados.

meat/egg fast is NOT Atkins' Fat Fast.

The meat/egg fast helps some people break a stall. It also is a good way to tell if you have some carb creep. If you think you've been keeping your carbs low but you're not losing, doing the meat/egg fast for a few days will let you know if you're consuming more carbs than you thought. After a few days of a meat/egg fast, some will SLOWLY add back in a few carbs and see how things progress.

I've always thought the terminology was a little confusing:

"I'm fasting" means I'm not eating food.

"Fat fast" is nearly all calories from fat.

"Meat and egg fast" is meat and eggs only (basically very low carb)

Nothing wrong with getting people's experiences and observations. I agree with not limiting pure fat on a M/E fast. I think butter and mayo, especially if it helps you stay on a few days, are fine IMO. I have done M/E in the past to kick off things.

Do what you think is best for you child!

Victrola. Does that mean that this thread is over? I think I might try eating only meat and eggs for this week and see if it jump starts me. So far I had 4 pieces of sausage for breakfast and 8 buffalo wings for lunch. I just had 3 pieces bacon as a snack. Dinner will be pork chops and deviled eggs.

The way the word "fast" gets thrown around makes me crazy! If you are eating you aren't fasting, right??

Having said that, I am doing meat and eggs right now cause I gained some weight trying a different plan last week. Eggs and chicken for me today...and tomorrow and the next day...

It drives me nuts too. Maybe we should rename to the MEAT AND EGGS PLAN.

Fasting doesn't only mean abstaining from food entirely. It can also mean restricting some types of food. Like Catholics fast for Lent, but that doesn't mean they eat nothing from Ash Wednesday to Good Friday! They generally abstain from some particular item. And Muslims fast for the month of Ramadan, but only in the sense they eat nothing until after sunset.

So the word does have shades of meaning, not only "no food at all." So Dr Atkins used it correctly when he referred to the "fat fast".

Fasting means to abstain from food or to eat very sparingly. I don't think the "meat and eggs" plan qualifies as a fast unless you are severely limiting quantities. I don't understand why we feel the need to put the word "fast" after it? It seems to only add confusion to the issue. I like "meat and eggs" or "meat and eggs plan". I mean, call it what you want I suppose but I don't think it's a fast.

Minnas,

I'm pretty sure none of us coined the term "meat and egg fast." I think it evolved from the way 'fast' has been used: 'Water fast,' consuming nothing but water....Atkins' 'fat fast,' which is almost all fat, intended for the severely metabolically resistant....'meat and egg fast,' consuming just meat and eggs.....So the purest meat and egg fast would mean meat, egg, and nothing else. What most people now see it as is virtually no carb or VLC.
Anything other that the abstinence of food is not truly a 'fast.' What's being referred to in the other examples is the abstinence of CERTAIN foods.
Atkin's fat fast is the abstinence of carbs and nearly all protein.
The meat and egg fast is the abstinence of anything that's not meat or egg.

My very low carb diet is basically meat and eggs most of the time with lots of extra fat. Works great for me. I'm down 18 pounds since Christmas day. Prior to going to high fat VLC, I had only lost 15 pounds in the previous 2 /2 years eating a regular Atkins type diet averaging between 20-maybe as much as 50 gms carbs a day. I tried everything. So I'm thrilled this is working so great for me now.
