First ever diet.....at 39 years of age....
I'm more than a little embarassed to be posting on a forum such as this, but I've been reading the posts for a few days and have found them so helpful. The reason I'm embarassed is that I'm a bicycle patrol police officer. I can go out and ride my bicycle 20-40 miles a day and am in great aerobic health. However, I mistakenly believed that, with so much exercise and carb burnoff, I could eat whatever I wanted. I never weighed myself. I noticed my clothes were getting tight, but was in denial.
That is until I won a huge award from the Dallas Cowboys. I received my award at the 50 yard line in front of 100,000 fans. Seeing myself on that huge 6-story high TV they have mounted above the field was a serious wake-up call to me. I was humiliated. I had no clue I'd gotten that fat. 265lbs. I'm still embarassed to say that out loud.....or even to myself. I'm three days into my first ever diet (Atkins) and the ketosis test strips show I'm in ketosis. I'm still riding (as much as this cold wet weather allows), but I've also added a strict weight training regimen. Adjusting my diet has been a little work, but nothing bad. I have to cook my lunch the night before. It was much easier swinging through the McDonalds drive-thru. The only thing I haven't enjoyed is the massive amounts of water. I'm literally stopping every 10 minutes to empty my bladder. It's been a huge inconvenience, but I know it's necessary to wash the ketones out of my system. Without further adieu, my "BEFORE" pics, including the one on the big screen that woke me up. I hope to have an "AFTER" pic this summer. ![]() Thanks in advance for answering all the stupid questions I'll be bringing this way. |

Welcome to the board, and the new you! Sounds like you're off to a great start.
And I just wanted to comment that one of my favorite lunches is a Wendy's Baconater (sans bun) and a caesar side salad w/a Diet Coke. I toss the bun, and use the lid from the salad as a plate. Works great! It takes a little planning, but with some creativity, lots of doors are still open to you with this WOE (way of eating). Congratulations on your decision to start a new, healthier lifestyle! |

Oh, trust me, I'm very bullheaded. I've always done what I said I would do......even at the risk of my wife putting me on the couch.

Congratulations on your award and for choosing to live healthier with Atkins WOE!!!
![]() There is so much support here, recipes for anything you could possibly be craving, and just all-around good people. You couldn't have picked a better place to be! It sounds like you are already educated about Atkins but if you haven't read the book, I recommend it. And remember, no question is stupid...we've probably all had the same question at one time or another. ![]() |

2 more things to add .... if you are interested in more male lowcarb camaraderie, check out the Camp Charlie challenge. Here's their February thread:
Boot Camp Charlie - February Edition It's been going for some years!! One other thing, make sure to take measurements -- have the wife help you with a sewing tape measure -- belly, thigh, upper arm, neck, chest -- there will be times when the scale does not show your progress, but the tape measure does. KUTGW! (keep up the great work) |

Hey TexasCop. I can relate to that wake up call. Someone posted a current pic of me on facebook. I was equally ANGRY and embarrassed but guess what?? It was my catalyst to get real. I copied it to my 'puter and will use it one of these days for my "before" photo. Right now I can't stand to look at it.
Keep coming back. There is a wealth of experience here for us Newbies. ![]() |

Welcome to the board TexasCop and congratulations on your award
Hang in there, it's a tough diet to get started on but once you get used to it, it becomes a lifestyle change and it will get easier. My advice is to seek out "legal" foods at different restaurants around town so if for some reason you don't have time to cook or get tired of cooking, you know where you can go get something on plan. BTW, I'm a volunteer with the Sheriff's Office. I graduated from Civilian Police Academy back in November and really enjoyed the presentation that the bicycle patrol police officers did on how they do their jobs, really cool stuff. Thanks for keeping the peace in TX, one of my favorite states! I lived in Tulsa for 5 years and would drive down to visit. Feel free to pick our brains, we love to help around here![]() |

My hubby thinks this is the easiest diet he has ever done! We love it here! Come often - let us know how you are doing! Hang in there - read, read, read the book! YOU CAN DO THIS. If you think you can, you will. If you think you can't, you won't. I THINK YOU CAN! Signed Baltimore Cops Wife ![]() |

Don't feel bad, I gained 100lbs while exercising heavily and eating a strict vegetarian diet. I thought I was doing everything right! But I kept gaining. It was because I believed the Low Fat Lie.
Once I finally found Low Carb, and studied it as much as I could, I've found it relatively easy to lose weight as long as I do what I know to do. Good luck to you, and congratulations. |
