Way too much time on my hands!

Does Beano really work?
Have you tried it? Does it work?
What gives you gas? Broccoli, apples, eggs????? I avoid some foods for this reason! |

I used to use it when I was vegetarian, with limited results. I don't seem to need it now.
I would always add it to bean dishes, but it was hard to tell if it worked because with the large amount of vegetable waste I consumed, I was a danger to the ecosystem on a good day. |

I read that beano will actually cause the carbs to affect you more especially if you eat things that have maltitol in them

I did take some the other day ... because that day I ate: brussel sprouts, celery, avocado, onion, cabbage and then on top of it had Linda Sue's Quesadilla Quiche with green onions in it ... by dinnertime, I realized that I had simply overdone it on the veggies and that the quiche and a side of sauteed cabbage might kill me .. so I took the beano just as I was sitting down to dinner and had no problem whatsoever. Most days, I don't have any problem with gas - and don't need beano or anything else, since I am eating high fat/protein with the veggies - and not such a crazy amount and combination, lol!! If you use Beano, you need to count total carbs and NOT deduct either fiber or sugar alcohol.
The way it works is to provide an enzyme that allows you to digest fiber like regular carbs so they don't just sit there and ferment and cause gas, etc. But if you low carb you probably don't WANT those carbs, right? I really think it's counterproductive to use it with a low carb WOE. From their website (just in case you don't believe ravenrose! LOL) How does Beano work?If something gives you digestive trouble, you can either not eat it or grin and bear it. Sorry. Last edited by ravenrose; 02-06-2010 at 06:57 PM.. |

Thank you, Pauline. I didn't mean to jump on you, but it's better to know. I was surprised their website was so forthcoming. When I researched this several years ago, it was like pulling teeth to get them to admit this is how it works!

What?!!! Beano has carbs? Is anything safe?
I can eat an apple and get gas...it's the sugar ......I love apples - besides the carb count (I'm closer to goal) it causes gas.....so I do avoid them....every once in a blue moon....but, I do love them....... |

Beano doesn't have carbs, per se, CurlsNCuffs, it is an enzyme that turns fiber, which you normally don't digest, into carbs.

Ok .. and tonight I made a crustless quiche with carmelized onions ... woulda had cabbage with it and taken beano, but decided to have green beans instead and forgo the beano fiber carbs ... Though, I'm thinking I might not be thanking you later Ravenrose.
