Bacon fat

I was talking to a friend of mine about our breakfast habits and I mentioned that I often got bacon fat on my hands and had to look at it and try to figure out, "Should I wipe it off or rub it in?"

She said that she often has the same dilemma! So I wondered if more folks have thought of that. It seems so clean and light, and I do use Coconut oil a lot on my hands. I just wonder if, besides the smell (which might help us befriend barking dogs) there might be an advantage to using bacon or other animal fats for a skin treatment.

Just odd stray thoughts that pass through my head...

I've "rubbed it in" plenty of times! Same when I'm rubbing olive oil on a chicken, or cutting up an avocado - all good oils!

I always rub whatever oils on my hands into my skin. The butter papers never get tossed without being rubbed over my hands. Bacon grease spatters get rubbed in. Chicken fat, beef fat, pork fat, all of them get rubbed in.

And I've yet to have anyone sicken or die from eating what I cook.

I'm scrupulous about cleaning knives and cutting boards and I don't leave raw meat just lying around the kitchen.

Personally, I think Americans are decreasing their immunity with their horror of dirt and germs.

Hmmm. I've never thought about it. I could run around my kitchen and find plenty of grease though if I wanted to. I just noticed my brand new toaster is already covered. Cooking all this meat does have it's disadvantages, but heck - if it's good for the skin...

I've been doing that for years! The chicken has been well-washed, I rub the oil on the skin only, the oil is a barrier between the skin and my hands, and it ain't kilt me yet.... But thanks for worrying about me!

I agree 100%. My sister (the dentist) is CONSTANTLY using those alcohol-based hand sanitizers - I mean like ALL the time - and guess what, she's sick about 6 times a year. Me, NEVAH sick!

I worked front office in a medical practice for years and the only two times I got sick and had to take a day off were when I got flu vaccines. (Well, other than the horrible hangover I had one day from a wine-tasting party...but that's another story....)

My theory is I got exposed to small amounts of OTHER people's stuff and my body was able to build an immunity to it. I STILL don't get sick and I also credit eating low-carb for a lot of that.

Meanwhile, back at the "fat is good for your skin" subject....

It's a great idea but being a dog owner I doubt it would work for me.

I use emu oil on my skin. I don't see why lard would be a problem, though I can't recall reading of any therapeutic properties of lard...

First you have to mitigate the pain from the splattering bacon grease huh? And then decide to wipe it off or rub it in.... I'll let it be and call it a freebie lotion treatment.

I've had problems with eczema for over 30 years. My allergist had me wash my hands in warm water, shake a little of the excess water and rub in Crisco. They never felt better and believe it or not you really CAN get Crisco completely rubbed in.

Oh Marcy, be careful.....crisco is hydrogenated and what goes on the skin absorbs into the body.

Ok, thanks. There's probably a better oil to use.

This brings up a point I've wondered about: If you rub a couple of T of EVCO on you...do you get the same benefits as eating it?? I'd find it easier to use this way!!

No, you have to take molecule size into account and it's debatable whether or not or how deep topical applications sink in (relative to the molecule size). But, if it's not good for me to ingest, I'm not putting it on my body to risk it, either.

Thanks! That's kind of what I thought, but... why not ask?

I know EVCO is good for you, I just have a hard time finding ways to ingest it sometimes. I'll keep trying! I LOVE to put it on after a bath when my skin is still damp. It really beats dry winter skin like nothing else!

Yes. A major function of the skin is to act as barrier so not much you put on your skin is able to get "into" the body. This is why most skin creams that promise to do pretty much anything other than moisturize can't actually deliver on those promises.

I have seen Crisco used my many people to relieve dry skin, eczema, and other skin problems. On another board I am active on I know of several who switched from Creme de la Mer to Crisco and swear it's just as good. It makes sense that it could be an effective sealant which is really what most moisturizers are. I don't think I would do it but it seems many do so successfully.

Bacon fat? Uh, no. Not for me.

Well I clarified some bacon fat and used it on my hands and arms. It feels really good, it doesn't smell as much like bacon as I thought it would (unless I'm just used to it) and it did seem to rub in quite a bit.

But I think I will stick to Coconut Oil. No real reason except I do like the smell of coconut.
