How Long Did it Take You To Lose 60lbs?

Just curious how long it took everyone who's lost about 60lbs. That's my ultimate goal, I've lost almost 20 since the last week of October and I feel like it's painfully slow.

Thought I'd compare, anyone wanna share?

I lost my first 75 in about 5/6 months. It flew off.

Averaged 3.5 or so per week. Some weeks more, some weeks less, some weeks none at all.

Then I stopped & maintained for quite a while. I decided to lose a bit more and it has been painfully slow after that.

I've lost 54 since last year at this time. About a pound a week. It's been a total of 78 pounds since October 2007. As you can see, the majority of it came off a lot faster once I was on Atkins.

My friend lost 60 lbs in 4 months. He did not play. He did cardio 5x a week, kept his carbs under 20 grams the whole time, and did strength training 4x a week.

20 lbs in 2 months is not slow at all! That is 10 lbs per month!

It is hard not to want to lose it super fast, but slow and steady wins the race!

There is nothing inherently wrong with losing weight fast, but I think that fast loss can mean fast gain later if you aren't careful. When you take your time, I think it helps ensure that you are in it for the long haul, adapting to a true lifestyle change, rather than a temporary diet change.

Congratulations on losing 20 lbs in 2 months!!

Almost everytime I have started induction (3x) I lost 25 pounds the first month, then I would have 50 off by 4-5 months. Good luck!!

This may seem like a stupid question, but for those that lost it that fast were you exercising? And if so how much? I know that Dr. Atkins states that daily exercise is "non-negotiable." Some people choose not to. I do, but is was just wonder what other peoples exercise program consists of.

For me I did some cardio everyday walking on my treadmill for around 30 minutes or 3 miles and did callanetics a few times a week, am looking to make a proper exercise routine to get the rest off though.

Hi LC…

I think I must like enjoy a painfully slow pace...for a couple of reasons.

Reason 1...
I've averaged 5 pounds a month for over 17 months now, and as a result, low carb is really intrenched well in my soul as well as into our life.

Holidays are never an issue, nor is being surrounded by foods which seem to produce temptation or cravings in others, or finding myself in situations where there is no easy low carb option...

Alas, since I decided to limit myself to 30 sensible carbs a day the weight is continuing to go away...at it's own pace not mine.

Reason 2...
I don't really have a particular figure in mind that I have to arrive at; the fact I've dropped 85 pounds in the preceding 17 months is merely a plus.

Since weight and inches are going away gradually, I'm adapting to the continually changing weight loss without even focusing on it.

This is a good pace to travel this ''road'' at, so I think I'll just keep moseying on down it...

I exercise. I have to watch my calories, carbs, exercise, and drink lots of water to lose weight. Exercise has now become a habit.

I started off doing 3 to 4 hours a day six days a week. I now average about 2 to 3 hours a day 5 to 6 days a week. I do both cardio (intervals) and weight lifting (circuit training). I am about 6 sizes smaller than I was when I was this weight before mostly because of the weight lifting. I am also more toned. I have had three stalls (first two were 6 weeks and this one going on 7 weeks). After each stall, I have had a significant whoosh. I weigh myself and take my measurements just to keep track.

Thanks

it just feels super slow. I'm inching along at 1-2lbs per week (which is a good and healthy pace). I'm impatient and I'm sure it's all in my head that it's slower then others.

I am hypthyroid so I should expect it to be slower then others, but I work myself up over nothing.

I'll get there, just gotta relax.

Hi *K*…
Naw me either. I get all the exercise I want just running around all day, and maintaining my schedule. And from Ap-Oct I golf one or two rounds a week.

Maybe if I was 30 instead of 61 years old, and still thought that people really care about how I look, I might do some...then again we've never really collected friends who are cosmetically driven.

At my age, I'm not applying to beauty contests, bike races, marathons or weight lifting competitions (no disrespect for those of you here who are athletes). I had enough energy to spend 6 hours on foot navigating the hills of SanFrancisco China Town this past summer (and having a great time). It was my wife (all 130 pounds) who needed take a break and rest...

Nicely done.

I'd love to hear about some of your regular meals, tips and tricks when you get a chance. This really does need to be a lifestyle change as I'm reading more and more about how sugar and starch is poison.

LinearChaos, just look on the bright side; like someone said upthread, if you lose slowly, you have more time to develop and reinforce those good habits. I'm not saying I prefer to lose slowly, but my doctor prefers it for me, and I had to learn patience, which isn't a bad thing. Plus, it may have taken me a lot longer than most people, but I never had a stall. It was slow and consistent.

Yeap. You will. The fact that you are losing is great. Congrats on your sucess. Just keep going and tweak when necessary. Eventually, you will hit your goal. Just remember to keep it up once you arrive.

I had to stop worrying about how fast it would take me to lose all my weight and concentrate on the process of making this a lifestyle and not a destination. I still have more weight to lose.

Really? As compared to what? You're losing at a fantabulous rate and should be strutting around like a peacock!

I think it took me 5-6 months to drop 60lbs, and my only regular exercise was walking.

I walked in our very hilly neighborhood about 2+ miles most nights after dinner with my DH. That plus lots of gardening and housework was all the exercise I did while I was losing. Now I need to tone up so I am working on that.

Hi MsChaos…
It may need to be a few days hence, but I'll just say that for me low carb is just the way I eat, and outside this group, I don't discuss it...with anyone.

And I count net carbs (and subtract both fiber, and sugar alcohol). I don't worry about how many calories a day I'm eating or what the fat content is or what kind of artificial sugar may be in things...I simply keep my carbs under 30 a day.

I eat late at night if I feel like it, and have not given up diet soda, coffee, butter, cheese, or heavy cream...in fact I make our yogurt out of half heavy cream and half whole milk and use it instead of sour cream as well as mixed with a few strawberries or raspberries once or twice a week.

I eat nuts, and vegetables, and steak, and chicken, and pork and all I'm ever counting is to be sure that I'm under 30 a day.

This has been the most fun and easy way of eating that I've ever been involved with...

If we are out shopping and need a meal, we just roll through the Golden Arches and get 2-3 of those dollar double cheese burger thingys without catsup (and with extra pickles) and peel the buns and eat guiltfree...

This of course is a quick-outline of more, but it really has been fun and easy. I hope it becomes that way for everyone, because I've been involved in counting-everything programs and even though I lost weight, I couldn't wait to get off of them.

For me, low carb is the life I've chosen and not something I'm going to do until I reach somewhere-or-other. I don't worry about maintaining because as far as I know I'm maintaining already and whenever I stop losing weight, I'm still going to keep it at 30 a day...

I'm sure I'll probably lose more pounds than I already have, but don't really care if I do...my doctor's happy, my wife's happy, and I'm happy with our lives and we are enjoying ourselves immensely...and enjoying great food along the way.

This forum is a continual reminder of the diversity of ways to accomplish an end - or actually more than one end. Not all of us here are eating the same way, nor do we all have the same goals in mind or needs in our lives...

Good to chat with you...happy new year.

Part of Larry's plan is that he and his wife enjoy having a higher-carb meal once every month or six weeks or so, and it's something they both like, and it doesn't interfere with his low-carbing the rest of the time. I think that needs to be included as part of your description of your plan, Larry, since you find it to be both positive and effective for you.

[edit]The reason I say this is, when it's been brought up before, several people have said they do planned meals like this on an occasional basis and it is yet another option when people are considering a low-carb lifestyle. If more people talked about it, then it would be considered a more credible option. I'm all for people speaking up about what works for them.

I have lost 70lbs in 21 months. I have lost incredibly slow and thats fine I am concentrating on my health. I have insulin resistance that is making it slow too. I am active and walk daily I don't go to a gym but have been thinking about jogging again. I am going to try extra hard to get off the last 25lbs my dream is to be a normal healthy weight for my height. I will get there.
