Exercise Weight Gain???

I was steady at 156 FOREVER...and working on losing, then a 3lb gain came on a week or so ago and wont budge.

I have really stepped up my workouts this last month, could this be it?

My body seems to shifting the weight around if that makes sense- butt is smaller and my jeans are only a little looser but they fit differently in places, I think I am losing ass.

I workout 30mins jogging, 5 days a week, work up a good lovely sweat, muscles are sore, but I feel really really good as long as i hydrate and stretch.

Am I Normal? Is it Water? Is it Muscles?

Alisa

Alisa, have you been measuring? If you are losing inches then it's likely you are losing body fat & gaining muscle. You will also be holding water for muscle repair if you are building new muscle mass.

Could also just be hormonal or salt related water weight too of course . Always good to remember that a 'stall' is no weight OR inches lost in at least 4 weeks and you haven't gained anymore than the 3# either. So keep going, give it at least 2 more weeks as long as you don't see another jump up the scale.

hello ozdancer, I agree, i do not think this is a stall. It;s a gain LOL

it just occurred to me while reading your response that I am also entering menopause, have missed a cycle before, but as of right now I have missed 3 cycles in a row which is a first for me, maybe that is also playing a factor in this.

sheesh! this sucks. I need to just keep positive and keep going.

It's probably a muscle gain... you are building up your muscles and... muscle weighs more then fat.... so that's probably what's happening.. your exercising is building muscles.. that's why your pants are fitting differently.. your body is toning up in certain areas.... this could be a good thing.. just continue on plan.. and make sure you stretch before and after your workouts.

thanks pmartin! hope you are right, hope to post a nice woosh or maybe even better a smaller size soon.

I have worked out before like this, I just don't recall the gain. But I also might be more out of shape than I realized having gone too long w/o exercising on a regular basis for a while...and stress, lots and lots of stress this past year.

I hear you about the stress of this year... I myself have been going thru mega stress in my life.. but I must lose this weight.. so stress or no stress.. it's low carb time for me...

Keep up your good work on your plan.. and keep up your exercising as best you can.. because you know that exercising itself if a great stress reliever.

For the record, muscle does not weigh more than fat. Muscle just takes less room so you appear smaller. The weight gain can either be female fluctuations (hormones), stress related, or that because you are working out, your muscles are sore and hold water in order to repair. If you continue to gain weight and you have not changed your WOE then I would see a good doctor and see if something is going on with your thyroid or insulin. I had the unexplained weight gain that did not go away until I corrected my thyroid level.

Good luck.

good for you! and us!

You are so right about exercising relieving the stress. I find myself crying at times when I am on the treadmill if I am overamped emotionally. It;s a fantastic release. I use to have panic attacks- still do once in a while, but of all the things I tried to help me with panic attacks, exercise was the BEST. I recall at one point when I refused any more paxil, and I would take a xanax and go for a jog LOL.

yes mam! I am making sure I got that covered (this time) I take synthroid. I am however still suspicious that I need tweeking, and have already made an appt for the 14th Dec at a new doctors to have it all retested and evaluated. I keep hearing I fall within the "normal" levels, but...i am still having hair loss and other issues.

when i first started taking synthroid, I lost twenty lbs. Mind you I helped by lowcarbing and exercising, BUT i had been lowcarbing and exercising before the synthroid and could not seem to lose. And when I did it was so hard to keep it off. My energy was so low.

did you feel a big change when you started with the meds?

Oh my God, YES! Night and day. I was also told my levels were within normal limits by four doctors, number 5 got it right. You need to check out the Thyroid section of this site. So many like you and me that had all the symptoms but were told our labs were "normal". Initially I had unexplained weight gain *20 # in 2 weeks and thinning hair that sent me running to a doctor. Was told I was normal and to restrict calories to 500. Anyway flash forward a year and I was so fatigued walking a block was too much I thought I was dying. Finally found my current doc he put me on T3 and after 6 weeks I am feeling awesome, like my old self, and the weight is flying off. I have surpassed my original goal. I owe it all to LCF members on the thyroid thread that helped me get me back! Read through the threads in there you will learn so much!

Good luck!

okay, I am going to go check the thyroid boards before I go to the new doc. I think I still have my test results from last time.

I may not understand it all, but maybe I can at least get a feel for if this new doc is leading me in the right direction.

thanks Lisa! You look gorgeous in your profile btw.

He wasn't the only doc to tell me that either. One doc sat me down and said some humans need to eat that little to maintain a healthy weight. THis was after I told him I lift heavy weights 4x a week and do some sort of HIIT 3x a week. Needless to say, he was fired. Seriously, that is 500 calls is basically anorexia, yes more than one doctor promoted anorexia to me. <<sigh>>
