Metabolism adjusting back to normal ?

I saw a hair dresser today who said that even though I am exercising everyday in aerobic classes, it will probally take about 6 months for my body to go back to a faster metabolism where I am able to start losing quickly. I have been extremly sedintary for the last 3-4 years, & 100 lbs overweight, so this is why she said it will take awhile & that my body will start going back to is normal way of functioning, but it will take several months of this regular exercise & low carb way of eating.

Anyway, what do you guys think about this?

Goal weight is 110-120
5'4"
Starting weight 232, 229, 228, 227! 232 lbs again!!!

My goal is to loose 10 lbs per month minimum, but 10 each month would be great!!! I am giving myself 2 years to reach my goal of weighing below 110 lbs. I want to turn 45 and look & feel better than I ever have in my life!!!!!

I think I wouldn't be taking health and fitness advice from a hairstylist.

let me clarify one thing here, she means just for my body to adjust to its getting used to buring fat/quicker metabolism, it is obvious that it will take many months for me to loose all of my weight. The question pertains to faster metabolism only body used to losing process.

Hi MIches…
There are several sources of information which I take with a grain of salt, and it includes things I hear at a lunch counter, in a barber chair, in a guitar store or from an Amway dealer...

I think I need to add hair dresser and perhaps nail technician to my list...

Michies, I lost very quickly at the start. If it would've took me that long to see changes, I wouldnt have been able to stay on plan..

That's great, but it doesn't mean she knows anything about your metabolism. I have never heard it said that when going from a sedentary lifestyle to exercising regularly, it should take several months for your metabolism to increase or for weight loss to hit its stride. If that were true, then wouldn't most people would have to wait months to see any noticeable results in their fitness level and weight? I don't think so. You asked what we think; that's what I think.

Neither have I. I didn't even pay attention to the hairstylist bit; it just sounds like this fact got pulled out of... the air.

Actually the larger you are, generally speaking, the faster you will lose staying strictly on plan, even without exercise.

Anytime you exercise and create more lean muscle mass that will, in turn, increase your metabolism, so to speak, as well because now you have more muscle burning more calories for you. Where your hairstylest pulled six months out of the air from, I have no idea.

So you should lose at a fine pace right now and as you exercise you will gain muscle and that will increase your metabolism.

But, you will NOT need to wait six months to see significant results from your WOE.

When you exercise aerobically, you will increase your metabolism WHILE you are exercising and possibly for an hour or so later--the increase is from the increased heart rate.

As a previous poster noted, should you build muscle, your metabolism will increase long term because muscle uses more energy than fat--e.g., men tend to lose weight faster than women because they have more basic muscle mass.

However, few women build muscle to such a degree that they increase metabolism--unless they are seriously lifting weights.

For most of us, simply moving more (housework, walking, gardening, etc.) helps us lose better.

I lost 110lbs in a year, without excercise. I am not proud that I was lazy and sedentary but the fact remains, I was. With Atkins I was able to get energy and began walking 15 minutes a day on my breaks @ work about 6 months into plan. But I did not start working out until I was down about 90 lbs. So I guess you could say the last 20 to come off was with the help of excerise. It helps tremendously, but you can lose without it. Just my 2pennies!

If you were ONLY exercsing, the information would apply. I killed myself working out and didn't gain, but that was it. In fact, I got anemic eating low fat.

However, since you are low carbing and working out; weight loss and healthier body will happen faster than if you had "only" worked out.

Hi chiody…
I've stopped talking to my hairdresser while my hair is being cut...because I began cutting my own and my wife gives me crazy looks when she catches me asking myself silly questions and pretending to give wise answers...while operating shears...

My current haircut...and hairstylist...

Hey now, I am a hair stylist. I know quite a bit out health and fitness. I do not believe what her stylist told her is necessarily true, but don't assume all stylists are dumbarses! I am almost done with my masters, going to law school. Not every stylist fits the stereotype.

Take ALL information with a grain of salt. Your body will have it's own weight loss experience which will be slightly different than anyone elses. Advice is good and listen to successful people but know that you are an individual and your weight loss/exercise results will be too.

Actually the more you lose, the slower your metabolism will be. After we lose 10-20% of starting weight the hormonal environment of the body changes. Levels of leptin and adiponectin and other hormones alter in ways the promote regain, signals are sent to the brain that change the way other organs work.

This is a known issue and one we all need to be aware of. If you get to goal you will probably have to eat less than predicted by various formulas to maintain whether or not you exercise.

It's always a good idea to be realistic about this when you embark on a weight loss journey. One major reason people fail to maintain is because they do not understand that when they get to goal (or lose significant weight) the only way to maintain is to eat a lot less than they ate when they were heavy.

Get your head around this and you are going to do a LOT better than most.

Oh my gosh you guys are too funny! I was waiting for a hairstylist to speak up and claim their intelligence.

Okay, I will simply work on doing a good induction program and continue to exercise & get started on losing 100 lbs.!!!
