Biotin & Prenatal Vitamins

I know this has prob been asked before, but here goes... has anyone used biotin for hair growth and how did it work. Also, I am tempted to use prenatal vitamins for overall well being, even though I am not preggers, because I remember how well they effected my whole well being, and my hair growth was fantastic. What do ya'll think about this?

Try searching "biotin" on the main forum; there have been many threads about it. From what I've read the reviews have been pretty positive concerning hair growth.

Prenatal vitamins are bad for an unpregnant lady, as they have higher doses of iron in them, which needs to be watched doubly if you're eating foods high in iron, and triply if you're not menstruating for one reason or another.

Be careful!

I take 5000mg of biotin a day. It does help with hair growth as my hair is growing faster and a bit thicker. Helping eyebrows fill in too. I took prenatal vitamins once (never pregnant) and I was so constipated from the iron after a few days I tossed them.

I've taken 5 mgs of biotin for years for my hair and nails (hair growth is about 3/4" to a full inch a month and nails are strong and flexible). That, along with MSM, which increases circulation, as well as silica (horsetail extract) for shine and strength. I've also taken prenatals intermittently, but oyvey is absolutely correct - you need to be careful with iron. I'm no longer taking them because I'm not menstruating.

If you're lacking in nutrients, your skin, nails and hair typically show it very quickly. Make sure you're getting your nutrients and listen to your body.

I don't think I have enough posts yet to PM you, and I won't spam the boards out of respect for the owners/administrators/staff but if you google "long hair community" you'll find a website that is devoted to growing long, strong, "healthy" looking hair (doesn't matter if you're growing long or are regrowing or are just trying to find health info related to hair care).

Hope this helps!
Steph

ETA: I do hope I'm not being too forward (I'm new here), but I do believe Cindy's dose is 5000 mCg's...?

I take biotin and MSM and my hair grows super fast. I just started taking prenatal vitamins last week. Never thought about the iron until I read the other post so thanks.

I've had fantastic results taking biotin and lecithin together for hair growth. Just took biotin for a while and it did okay, but things really picked up when I added lecithin. I take one 5000 mcg biotin per day and 1 small lecithin - don't know the size but they're small football-shaped pills.

Good luck!

I was fairly certain that biotin was helping my hair and nails grow quickly, and thicker -- and then I ran out of biotin, didn't pick up a new bottle for more than a month, and now I know FOR SURE.

You know that "unavoidable" hair loss from dieting everyone talks about? I avoided it -- until I quit taking the biotin. Still took all my other supplements, just quit the biotin.

Lost a BUNCH of hair. Nails breaking and torn.

This was about two months ago. I'm back on it, and the hair I have left is growing more quickly again (as are my nails) -- but overall my hair is much thinner and it's going to take a while to regrow. Sigh.

Take the biotin. Keep taking it. 5000mcg (5mg) a day.

I am TTC, and my doctor told me it is very important to take them now, before I become pregant. He also advocates a LC diet too.

There's nothing wrong with getting ready for baby. For someone who has no way to get rid of extra iron (like me), it's bad for the long term. TTC is a totally different story and you need your folic acid among other things. Listen to your doc and make sure to get a good, whole food prenatal.

TTC and not pregnant, not planning on becoming pregnant are two different things here.

For example you need the extra folic acid before you concieve, because the point in the fetuses development where the folic acid makes a difference in preventing birth defects is so early in a pregnancy that most women don't know they are in fact pregnant yet.
