ACK! Migraine at work and boss' wife gave me COKE!

I had the WORST migraine today at work. I was literally ready to throw up my head hurt so bad, despite having taken tylenol, advil, etc., nothing helped. My boss' wife saw me sitting there with my head down and asked what was wrong ... I told her and she immediately said "you need SUGAR!" and promptly went into the office refrigerator and got me a full-sugar coke and said "drink this, you'll feel better!!!"

Well, that's a tough one ... she's not only the boss' wife, but she's very dominating and bossy (even over HIM ! ) so what's a girl to do ?? Add to my already insidious pain by ingesting SUGAR? HELLO? So I took the bottle from her, and she watched as I *sipped* .... I wanted to GAG from one itsy bitsy sip .... when she was satisfied that I was actually drinking it ... she went back to her office ... I hid the bottle for the rest of the afternoon and when she wasn't looking, DOWN THE DRAIN WENT ALL THE SUGAR !!! Blech !! That stuff is CRAP !! I now understand how it does, in fact, clean battery cables and toilets!

Congrats dumping it out. On another note, did it do anything for you physically other than taste disgusting?

Last Spring, as an experiment I downed a full can of sugared Coke to see if the rise in BS would give a boost of energy on the return leg of a long, cold ride. The answer was no difference whatsoever. I should've checked my BS at the end of the ride....so be it....

Hrmm

The sugar wouldn't likely have done anything bad for you other than to knock you out of ketosis temporarily.

But the caffeine in a coke might have worked if you were seriously in trouble with a migraine.

Having suffered from migraines on and off for years I will be honest and say I would have taken anything to stop the pain (including Coke). You could always re-start low-carb the next day.

If you still suffer, try a really strong cup of coffee next time because caffeine is absolutely an acceptable migraine remedy. I was told by a headache specialist I saw once that if you don't have specific migraine drugs on hand take a large volume of ibuprofen with a caffeine chaser.

Ditto Moons Mom ~ I suffer from migraines as well. 800mg of Ibuprofen with an extra strong, extra large cup of coffee.

Migraines are the worst!! Did you finally get some relief? I often have to "sleep if off" if the ibuprofen/coffee combo doesn't do the trick.

Yep, I used to have a prescription for my migraines and it included migraine. Must be the weather today 'cause I've been fighting a migraine all day.

It's not the sugar that helps, it's the caffeine. A diet coke would have done just as well.

I get tons of migraines - hormones/weather/food intolerances-allergies.

Generally curling up in a ball with an ice bag.

If I'm queasy, I get a trusty 5 gallon bucket. I've tried everything.

I sure thank God when I'm feeling better.

Sorry you were sick!

Betty,

They have Excederin for Migraines. It does contain caffeine and won't make your stomach queasy at all.

I keep a bottle at work.

***One thing tho: Read the label and abide by it. Seriously.

Yeah.

If you can hit the migraine with something OTC, do it. The tripitans (Imitrex, etc) have been linked to heart attacks in previously healthy women.

The triptans have been a lifesaver for me-no heart problems at all and I have been taking them since they came on the market. I take Maxalt MIM (melt in the mouth-it works wonders and is fabulous when I am vomiting.

Well, the crushing chest pain, so bad the ER put me on EKG - was a real buzzkill. I did some research. Read the insert the pharmacy gives you, it's a real eye-opener. I'd rather puke in my bucket.

I have read the insert. As I posted I don't have a problem with them. They are a godsend-they can stop a migraine starting in its tracks and the severe ones I wake up with already in the throes of-the recovery time is much shorter. Aspirins can kill-as with all meds YMMV. Sorry they don't work for you Heather-migraines suck.

LOL, nope! Guess I've submerged myself in LCF posts enough to assume correctly to which insidious drug the OP referred.

actually, for a TRUE migraine; a crappy coke WOULD work better than ANY of the stuff you took
Tylenol/Advil will NOT ease a Migraine or Cluster headache.

But it's NOT the sugar in a Coke; it's the caffeine that helps...

ANY Extra-Strength Excedrin will work, as it's the triple-whammy of caffeine, aspirin, acetaminophen that relieves the Migraine.

I had an Rx for my migraines...
(that were actually cured by drinking SF soy milk for many years)

I have found actually that sugar does help me when I'm totaly nauseated and have been vomiting from a Migraine.... at that point sipping on juice or sugary soda does make me feel better and improve the nausea.
Not that I'm recommending this as healthy, by any stretch... just saying... it has actually been one of the biggest challenges for me to overcome with lowcarb, because there are times when all I want is just a few sips of juice.

I've gotten help from Zofran ODTs (melt in the mouth) - its an anti-nausea medication, no relation to triptans and its not specifically for helping migraine pain. It just helps nausea.
