Lindt chocolate - how can the carbs be so different?
I have two bars of Lindt Chocolate in front of me - 85% cocoa and 90% cocoa.
You would think the higher the cocoa, the lower the carbs, right? Well, there's a pretty dramatic difference in carbs: 85% per 40g (4 squares) there are 8g carbs and 3g fiber However, in the 90%, for the exact same amount, there are 14 carbs and 5 fiber. I'm confused. I thought the higher cocoa content would lower the carbs but, it's actually much higher. What gives? |

On the boxes that I have in front of me, both list the exact same ingredients in the exact same order:
Chocolate, cocoa powder, cocoa butter, sugar, natural bourbon vanilla beans. |

I just went to their website and they list the exact same ingredients. Under each bar there is a nutritional information pdf which I clicked and it's exactly the same as is on the bars I have.
The 90% has significantly more carbs. I don't get it???? |

I saw that also when I was at Target. I did not get it or still do not get it.

Hmm what I clicked on on their website listed different ingredients-I was on the European site. The 90% has more cocoa solids than the 85 so maybe this accounts for this difference-different blend of ingredients.

Maybe they add more sugar to the 90% bar? That's pretty high cocoa content and might be bitter without the added sugar. Just guessing though!

I'm wondering if for some reason the numbers are recorded differently -- that is, the 85% bar lists the fiber already subtracted from the 8g (this is common with European products), and the 90% lists the carbs without the fiber subtracted.
If that were the case, the 85% would have 11 carbs and the 90% would have 9 carbs, which sounds close to what you'd expect in terms of difference. |

Can't help with the 90% as I haven't been able to find that in Australia yet. But our labeling laws have the fiber already deducted from the carbs (listed separately) and the nett carbs for 40g are 7.6g. So it seems that your bar already has the fiber deducted from it too so your total carbs would be ~11g, less 3 for fiber giving nett ~8g
