Dutch Victory!!!

I know many of you have favourite foods from childhood. My family is Dutch - therefore many of the foods I find hardest to resist are dutch in origin. We get our freezer packs of meat from the butcher who is also a Dutch import store- If you haven't been exposed to Dutch food- forgive me- but what I DIDN'T do became a huge victory for me
I didn't buy Stroopwaffles ( waffle/ cookie with butter and syrup in the middle)
I didn't buy hagleslaw- chocolate sprinkle you put on your bread or toast where they melt into yummy goodness
I didn't buy croquettes- chicken ( or beef) mashed with potatoes, cream and spices- then rolled in toasted bread crumbs and deep fried
and the list continues- I left with my meat ( and chocolate letters for Christmas-for the kids) and that's IT- I think it's the first time I haven't caved.

There was more I didn't buy- but I've realized that many of these were treats at Christmas etc....and I find them horrible to resist- harder even than soda or bread...
How about you all- any treats from childhood you're going to have to work extra hard to resist?

I grew up with wonderful, starchy/fatty Southern cooking--biscuits and cornbread, fried okra, fried chicken, cream gravy, banana pudding, pecan pie (my grandmother made the best piecrust on earth). Luckily, some of those things can be reproduced pretty easily. Both my grandmothers made excellent pots of greens with fatback or salt pork, which is great for a low carber. And it's not too hard to approximate fried chicken or cream gravy with some LC substitute ingredients!

Ugh, I'm Greek so just imagine!! The list is endless, especially for holiday foods...tsoureki, koulourakia, pites, kourabiedes, melomakarona, etc. (luckily most of you probabaly haven't heard of these things!)

I still buy my children chocolate letters for Christmas and love, love, love croquettes. We used to put the chocolate sprinkles on rusks and make a sandwich with Speculaas. Yum!

My husband is Dutch and often waxes lyrical about hagelslaw.
