Low carb had it's time to shine a few years ago and unfortunately it failed for many people in it's high fat, no calorie counting version. That plan does not work for many as evidenced on this board. A lot of people do have to count calories and watch fat. Not everyone can eat the same and be successful. Low carb is alive and strong just in many different versions.

I also wanted to add that Atkins doesn't do itself any favors. I am a member on FB and they are always giving away talking about shakes, bars, cookies and other crap. You can't tell me that doesn't give people the wrong idea.
So if they follow a low carb diet why are they always going on about the low fat part of it? What we're talking about here is how they message about nutrition on that show. Regardless of how they're really eating, the emphasis is on low fat, not low carb.

I disagree that Dr. Atkins' plan doesn't work in it's high fat, no calorie counting version. If you actually read his book and follow his plan the way it is written, the high fat, no calorie counting part is only the initial phase. I think induction is a very useful tool to change your way of eating if you've always been an over-eater and are afraid of being hungry, which is why a lot of people fail on low fat diets. After induction you're supposed to add good carbs, lower fat, and be mindful of portion size (which is basically the same as calorie counting).

And while I don't like the fact that Atkins promotes its processed bars and shakes, it's a business after all. Just like Jillian Michaels is a business. She has a line of supplements and fat burning pills and also charges on her website for nutrition and exercise advice - as well she should. This is America, and you're allowed to make money from your business.

I agree with you Julia about Atkins but think back to when Atkins was all the rage. Restaurants were pushing high fat burgers and such, Companies jumped on the low carb bandwagon and being low carb was all the rage. It was an epic fail. I don't think people actually read the book and understood what Atkins was all about.

Jillian has said on her radio show Atkins is old school and that new low carb diets are much more nutritionally sound and much more balanced.

Yes, the do low carb but they also do low fat along with it. Pick up a copy of Jillian or Bob's books in a book store and browse through them. You will then see the diet the contestants are on.

Melissa Joan Hart is/was doing some form of LC and talked about it in a magazine. Ricki Lake has mentioned her WOE is some what LC one year on Celebrity Fit Club Tina Yothers said that for the final weigh in her team did low carb to lose the most weight so even though it's not in mainstream media via TV it is definitely in magazines and on the covers too and some celebrities do talk about it.

No it may not be as "popular" regarding being talked about on TV and may never be but it is out there.

Some past season TBL contestants were in several magazines talking about their eating plan and just about everyone mentioned carbs and how they eat them earlier in the day with some kind of protein.
There is the occasional article in men's health about how good low carb is for you. Mostly their writers recommend non-refined carbs though and avoiding white starchy food, and of course the deceitful "don't eat red meat" mantra. I found it interesting that in Good Calories, Bad Calories that lean meat used--at the turn of the 20th century--to mean trimming away the extra fat on meat rather than just chicken, turkey and fish.
