Portabella mushrooms/biggest loser

I haven't been on as much lately so if this was mentioned sorry.
Did anyone see on Biggest Loser how that chef used portabella mushrooms as a bun for a burger? YUM! I thought it looked and sounds delish and can't believe I haven't thought of this myself!?!
Anyone else do this?

if you cook a PB mushroom well enough, marinate it, grill it, it's like a steak!

My favorite "out-to-eat" is a portabella turkey burger from Ruby Tuesdays! I strip the bun and get the salad bar. To-Die-For!!!

I've tried this but the mushroom didn't hold up very well

not to mention that the texture and taste is all wrong.

Do you use the mushroom-bun raw, or do you have to cook it a bit?

That sounds awesome--do you cook the mushroom first, or just add the toppings to it raw and then cook?

I love this one too!! Best tasting turkey burger out there. I hate wasting the bun and hate it when my DH picks at it, so I always tell 'em to ditch the bun. So love the selection on their salad bar.

I know I wouldn't like it as a "bun" but I do the same as fuentes and make a pizza out of my portabellas.....I do like to saute crimini's, onions and garlic then top with bleu cheese and bacon on my very rare burger!

well since most folk likes mushroom swiss burgers I could see using a cooked portabella sliced as a bun to hold my burger not expecting the texture of a bread bun , but not a raw one.

Portabellas have a texture similar meat and are often used as a meat replacement. One prepared along the lines of a steak will have a similar mouth feel.

And I third the recommendation for using them as a pizza-topping receptacle!

Back when I waitressed banquettes and such we often had portobello mushrooms gratinated with cheese on top as a vegetarian option when the rest of the room was eating beef tenderloin. It's quite yummy.
