The scale finally moved!!

After a slow induction (2lbs) and a no loss for the las 3 weeks the scale finally moved 2 lbs!!! I cut back on the cheese and the calories a little. Is it ok to continue in owl with such a slow loss. 8lbs in 6 weeks? I've stayed in dark ketosis while well hydrated but have to fight for every pound on the scale.

Eight pounds in 6 weeks is NOT slow loss. It's normal loss.

If this isn't your first stint of low carbing, your loss is exactly what a person your size should expect and yes, calories count.

Don't compare your experience with that of people who weight twice what you weigh or people doing a very low carb diet for the first time.

Ketosis has no effect on weight loss save for glycogen-related non fat losses, after the first stint of low carbing. I know a person who has been in ketosis for a decade due to a diabetes diet without losing any weight. I was in ketosis for 2.5 years without losing any weight and, in fact, gradually regained a few pounds.

Keep watching the calories and you'll do fine.

You're absolutely right. It's so hard to get into the mindset of not being a first timer and realize it's now a way of eating and not a new diet anymore. I'm ready...

I completely agree with this. This is my second go-round and I really don't think my loss has anything to do with ketosis or the metabolic advantage that is associated with LC. I firmly believe that my loss is directly related to a reduction in calories. I probably would be achieving the same loss if I were doing a low fat/weight watchers type of diet. I just happen to enjoy being able to each the richer foods that are allowed on LC.

There can be a dramatic loss the first time someone puts themselves into ketosis. I lost 20 lbs within weeks, a good 15 of it real, the first time I did a ketogenic diet. But once I adapted, that was it. And after I regained (in 2002) and went back on the diet, the weight loss was very slow to get started, once I had dropped the glycogen-related pounds everyone loses when they lower carbs to ketogenic levels.

I'm convinced that during that first stint the body is taken by surprise and drops fat out of confusion, but once it figures ketosis out, that never happens again.

Unfortunately, a lot of people regain after dramatic low carb losses because they assume they can lose again the same way they did the first time.

It is possible to lose a second time--I did better the second time--but only with careful attention to calories and a lot of patience. It took me about 9 months to drop 30 lbs the second time as opposed to 2 months to drop 20 the first.
