If Dr. Atkins were still alive...
what do you think he'd be doing? Would he be writing a new book? What would he say about the recent surge in anti-Atkins low-carb plans? I've read a lot of books that advocate cutting carbs, esp. starchy ones, but still bash the Atkins approach.
I've been re-reading his book to kind of remind myself why I wanted to follow a LC plan to begin with and I am just reminded of the fact that people really don't read his book before judging it. Even if you don't follow his plan (which I currently don't) how can you judge the plan without reading the book? There are so many little nuggets, facts, tips, truths all throughout the book that people totally ignore (even people who "follow" his plan). Somehow people miss the variety of foods that he reccommends and see only the beef and bacon. When I look at his sample menus I see a lot of balance, flavor, and nutrients. Somehow people miss the end of the program which really isn't an end but a slow discovery of how to maintain your weight loss. I wonder... Last edited by NewStartNow; 09-27-2009 at 12:22 AM.. |

I agree with you for sure. My SIL says Atkins is a horrible diet. I am like did you read the whole book or just the first 2 weeks, where it is strict but then you move on. I think people tend to get stuck in the first 2 weeks and never want to leave and then they get bored and blow it. You need to follow the book. Very healthy, I don't think any diet advocates eating a lb of bacon and a slab of cheese, I could be wrong. I think it is about balance. I hate low fat dressing. I buy regular, but I use 2 TBSP. not half the jar. I agree with you..

When I read DANDR, I remember him going on about a new sweetener, currently unavailable in the USA, called SUCRALOSE!
![]() I remember him recommending Saccharine over Aspertame. I wonder how he would weigh in on the whole AS debate?! I wonder what he'd say about Malitol and Stevia... And, yes. People do get "stuck" on the whole induction thing. When I think about what a "healthy diet" is, (a variety of foods in their natural state) I think, well, that is basically Atkins maintenance!! |

Dr. Atkins when on television programs etc., would always promote the cleanest eating first and foremost. He also claimed to have just popped a few raw nuts at lunch, his wife wrote most of the recipes in his books and if you'll notice, they're fairly gourmet utilizing many alternative ingredients.
He was not the first pioneer of low carb nor the last. Remember, bashing sells books. My point is, if Atkins were alive today, he was a progressive enough thinker to have written more books based on nutritionally sound advice that is hitting mainstream today. ie: omega fatty acid ratios, vitamin D, etc. If you want to learn what Atkins was really about, don't discount his vita solutions book. I refer to it frequently for clients. Many fabulous supplement protocol recommendations for particular ailments with clear explanation. these recommendations include alternative such as herbal remedies. |

I think Dr. Atkins would be very proud of the fact that with each passing year, low-carb becomes more and more mainstream. Furthermore, in addition to feeling great and being healthy, the program is highly effective for those wanting to carve out extraneous body fat and look great in a swimsuit. Ask someone who is serious about diet and fitness (and looks it) how they get really cut, and they very often report some level of starch/sugar-avoidance as opposed to low-fat and low-calorie.
All in all, people are finally getting that Atkins isn't a fad, but a way of eating to be followed and enjoyed after one makes their ideal-weight goal. |

I would hope he would be retired and enjoying time with his family. Life can be snuffed out in an instant.....as his death showed.
