I was disgusted - but glad I prepared!
I ride a paratransit service with my husband. On my own, I take the bus. I estimate about 2/3 of the clients are diabetic and riding due to complications (amputations, blindness, etc).
Last week the service had a big party downtown. When I go out, I always bring my own soda because I am constantly thirsty due to medication (I check my fasting sugars every morning, so I knew it wasn't that). Diet soda, to state the obvious. I bought six half liters. I drank one on the way... and we headed into the building. We check in, and they send us to the drink station. They ask me what I'd like "Anything diet, or some water". Sorry, they don't have either. They are catering to a hugely diabetic population, and all they have are name-brand HCFS sodas! Everyone has a can of this crap in their hand. They said I was the first person to object, and we were an hour late. Thank GOD I brought MY soda. |

Wow! Good for you, Heather. And they wonder why the world is so unhealthy.
My dad is diabetic and when I went to stay with him for a couple of weeks I was shocked at how he ate and what his doctor approved. |

Good for you for being prepared.
I think that it is silly that they didn't even have water. You don't have to be diabetic to want to drink water. Everyone should always have water. |

Your descriptions of the paratransit users are always depressingly grim. And how bad off do people have to be before they decide drinking sweet soda isn't that important?! My God. |

That is OUTRAGEOUS! I am a caterer. I always ask about special dietary needs as I menu plan...food allergery, vegetarians, Kosher and yes, sugar issues. Duh!
Even still, I always make sure there is at least unsweetened iced tea, coffees & water with citrus slices. What a shoddy caterer. |

Thanks!
I thought about calling in a complaint, but I doubt it would get anything other than a reputation for me. Everyone was just grinning away in their electric wheelchairs and walkers, with a can of sugarcrap in their hands. They served hot dogs, which could have easily been decarbed but I did not see any HAIRNETS! I am really paranoid about food safety so I said "no thanks". I wonder how many people had exacerbations after that party? |

ewww....no hairnets. I'm weird about that too. Obviously not at a family BBQ...but in a public setting...eww.

Yeah, I passed my Serve-safe test and the sight of ungloved hands touching the bread, and no hairnets, was really an appetite killer.
My favorite restaurant for cleanliness is actually Burger King. Someone is always wiping things down with sanitizer, gloves, hairnets, my favorite date place. I almost died from salmonella contracted at a major chain restaurant in 2004, so I'm pretty uptight when it comes to food safety. You should see me hovering over the grill with my meat thermometer! Nothing comes off until it hits at least 165! I just found it so sad and offensive that they cared so little about the health of their patrons. |

I've made a similar observation that makes me sad. I've been reading quite a bit about how sugar feeds cancer cells. There's a lot of good research to back that up, but the healthcare industry seems to be ignoring it.
I take my mother-in-law to an Oncology office regularly and I'm shocked to see a big old candy dish full of sugar on the receptionist's desk. Feeding sugar to cancer patients is just wrong. |

Truly sad how few people with diabetes blindly (sad pun) follow traditional dietary advice.
My FIL, Type 2, diagnosed just a few years ago, refuses to see the correlation between his BG spikes and the white bread and rolls, cookies and crumb cakes he still endulges in. Would not be surprised by a high sugar related medical event in his life. FIL says he is following his dr orders by getting at least 45-50 carbs per meal, and having carby snacks. I have heard similar advice my DH's doc, but we know better. ![]() |

Yeah, I want to scream "You don't have to die!" at them... but I can't. If they ask about how I'm losing the weight, I tell them.
Today I gave a copy of DANDR to one of the paratransit drivers "I don't want to end up like the clients" she said.. the majority of the job is to and from dialysis. Sad, sad, sad. The American Medical establishment has done us a tremendous disservice. I know of many individual doctors who support LC, but so many just follow the tired old low fat lie. |
