Eating Sweet Potatoes???
I know it's been a very long time since I was actively using the LCF site, but I keep seeing posts from different people saying that they eat sweet potatoes. I certainly love them, but I thought they were a big NO NO when you are doing low carb. What's the real scoop on sweetie spuds?

They are a no no if you are on induction. But, eventually some folks add them back in...depends on where you are in your journey and if your body can tolerate them. Some never add them back in. YMMV.

They're definitely allowed on low carb, but some people choose not to eat them. They're a lot lower on the glycemic index compared to regular potatoes, which is why some people eat them. I eat them, but I only eat half of one at a time, so the carb count isn't too terribly high.

just wanted to chime in here: someone out there makes some awesome health-friendly sweet potato chips that I got for my daughter a while back. They only had about 6 grams of carbs in a serving, so I tried one. They were delicious. I'll want to treat myself to some every now and then when I'm at goal, or higher up on the carb ladder.

The bonus with sweet potatoes is that they are nutrition powerhouses ~ MUCH better than a white potato!
I'm not at a point where I can eat them, but they'll definately be a part of my maintenance if I can tolerate them. |

I eat them very occasionally when I am wanting a treat. I never eat white potatoes so it is nice to have something a little sweet and starchy once in a blue moon!

I am able to tolerate them with no problem. I have them once or twice a month. They are like a treat for me. I put butter and splenda on mine, delicious!

I have one now and then, especially if we eat out and I am having a really nice steak or well prepared piece of chicken. However, I didn't eat them until I hit the correct rung on the carb ladder.
![]() I think the reason that some people have a hard time maintaining is that they don't climb the ladder and learn what foods can be added back in and what one can't tolerate. If you are following Atkins, reread your book to remind yourself how to correctly follow the good Doctor’s diet. I follow DANDR myself PS if you order sweet potato at a restaurant is sure to tell them you don't want sugar and cinnamon on it. (Butter and sour cream is really good on a sweet potato.)

A 5" sweet potato has 26 total carbs - and I love them with butter, ground cinnamon, & Splenda. Wow.

Be careful ordering them in restaurants, some places dump a bunch of brown sugar on them (Outback for example.) Just keep that in mind and ask for no sugar when you order.
(PS.. Just butter for me thanks!) |

I love to oven bake sweet potato rounds in coconut oil and sprinkle with sea salt.
