Carbs in Tums or Rolaids?

I love doing low carb, but a diet of lots of meat and raw vegetables tends to give me recurrent bad cases of heart burn. I'm talking about the kind of heart burn that nearly burns your throat out!!! So to handle the burn, I chew a couple of tums on and off during the day. How much damage am I doing in the way of increasing my daily carb count?

I take Zantac 150 to help with my heartburn (it's to the leel that you have) which should have no carbs.

Good idea!!! On carb in 2 tums can really add up fast if you are having a bad day of acid reflux! Good grief, don't they make sugar free tums or rolaids? Looks like I'll be buying that expensive Zantac.

You can get generic Zantac 150 at Walmart or your grocery. Albertsons carries a generic version for something like 4 bucks. They work just as well as the brand. And if you can't find the 150, two 75s are the equivalent.

Also, I believe rolaids is 0 carb, not sure about the sugar free tums tho.

Depending on your age, you might need a little help in the HCL department. We tend to lose this as we age. A diet of meat and veggies is actually a prescription for heartburn and when it's so bad that you are "urping up", this has a danger of leading to esophogeal cancer. Take care of it right away. Digestive enzymes are also a good idea.

Taking tums, rolaids or zantac to neutralize acid when too little acid might really be the case is a slippery slope.

A shot of raw apple cider vinegar (braggs) might be your better choice.

Again, too little acid causes this not too much....and I'm willing to bet a rib eye on the fact that you have too little....

Apple cider vinegar gives me HORRIBLE heartburn, I stay far away from it. This week the heartburn has been significantly less than last week. My protein foods haven't been quite as greasy as before. I have never seen sugar free tums; didn't even know such an animal existed. I will check into purchasing some rolaids instead of tums. I got into the habit of tums years ago because rolaids used to be full of salt and I'd blow up like a horny toad. I keep hearing about Albertson's. This is not a store that I'm at all familiar with. Hearing about the generic zantac for $4 makes me wish that an Albertson's was right up the road. I'm due for my annual physical, so I guess it's time to address the issue with my doc. UGH! Sometimes the thought of taking another pill everyday just makes me feel sick!

I think Albertson's is a western/southern chain. Never heard of them in Connecticut, either, when I lived there.

They have cheap generics at Walmart, also. I've bought generic zantac 150 there, I think it's around the same price, $4 or so. If you can stand going into the darn place!!! Nothing puts me into a foul mood faster than going to Walmart!

I just take prilosec OTC every day. It's the only thing that works for me. It's a little pricey but it's worth it to not be in constant agony every day.
