WHY do they insist on putting sugar in meat???

My husband just brought home two bags of Salt & Pepper pork rings and guess what???? They have one carb per 10 pieces because frazzlin' SUGAR is the fourth ingredient!!! I simply can NOT wrap my mind around the concept of dumping sugar, corn syrup, or anything else sweet on top of my meat products!

Why? Cuz it tastes good.

Not that I like it, I hate it being a LCer. But that is why. Americans are used to sugar in nearly everything & until America kicks the sugar habit, manufactures will keep making what sells best.

I found 0 sugar bacon at Walmart the other day. I actually ended up sprinkling a tiny bit of splenda on it to make it taste like the 'less than 1 gram carb' bacon I usually have. Yep, 'they' have me hooked on it, too.

I know that us American's are spoiled rotten, but I actually am not particularly fond of sweet stuff in my meat. Maybe because I was raised on a farm and we didn't eat a lot of commercially processed meat.

I agree people love sweet things, they are making things that the general public will like the taste of and buy. Even low carbers make all sorts of concoctions where sweet is mixed with meat (sf syrup on bacon, sweet dressings/marindes, splenda in dinner recipes with meat etc).

I detest any hint of sweet on meat.

Well, I can certainly say that it's made my induction quite difficult. DH and myself are becoming much wiser and ingredient aware. Bacon is another one that blows my mind---unless it's brown sugar bacon WHY IS THERE SUGAR IN IT??? Bacon does not need sugar; it's delicious all by itself. Same with sausage!!! I've heard all about Trader Joe's over and over on this site, so I'm guessing they must carry a lot of low carb friendly food items. A trader Joe's just opened up in my city, but it's down near the ocean front which equals TONS & TONS of traffic; especially during this time of year with all the tourist.

It doesn't surprise me that they put added junk in snack foods. It's when it becomes hard to find chicken breasts that don't have added sugar/salt brine where it really becomes annoying.

I hear ya!!!! Ham is another sneaky culprit. Even sliced turkey can be loaded down with sugar and other crap! Typically, my DH and I just buy whole chickens or thighs and fix them ourselves. I will also roast a turkey in the oven bag and eat off that for a week. When I tasted the pork rinds that DH picked up today, I could easily taste the sweet in them---who the heck wants sweet Salt & Pepper pork rinds?????????

I totally agree! I buy almost all my meat online because I eat only grass-fed beef or bison, and they have hot dogs and bacon specifically labeled "no sugar" and list the few additives. That's really helpful--and healthy. The fact that they have to make a specific mention of "no sugar" indicates how prevalent that additive is in American meat!

I have always loved deli meat but no longer buy it because of this [sigh!]

I was ticked when I read the hot sausage ingredients in my local Kroger: corn syrup! That's why we buy most of our meat from a small, locally owned meat market. It's fresh, and no additives.

I think that there's 1 gram of carbs/ounce in deli turkey. I simply account for it and eat supplement fish with virtually no carbs............

things that stimulate your taste buds keep you coming back for more, spending money on their product. They work on this! It is a sinister but common practice.

Most of the flavored pork rinds also contain MSG, which makes me feel like crap. I just splash some hot sauce on the plain ones. Some of the plain ones also have MSG, I have no idea why they think they need it.

Gwaltney makes their bacon with no sugar and the center cut bacon has 40% less fat for those who watch their fat intake. AND it's very reasonably priced!!

There are two reasons they brine/sweeten meat. One it tastes better and two brining/tenderizing the meat makes the meat more tender than it would be if not brined. In other words more profit margin for the manufacturer.

I CAN NOT BELIEVE ----chocolate chip pancake with sausage on a stick!!! THAT'S JUST WRONG!! I have really wised up in the past 3 days with checking EVERY label, even when I think I don't need to. Whoever mentioned that flavored pork rinds usually have carbs were right on the money because I checked today. I also found some of the cheaper brand dill pickle spears have carbs in them. I checked calorieking.com boiled eggs. Generally one medium to large egg has .6 carbs, BUT the kind of boiled eggs that you can purchase at Wawa or 7-11 have 5 carbs each!!! Must be sugaring and brining the heck out of them to make them less perishable.

Although I totally agree that sugar is added to FAR too many products unnecessarily, I wouldn't really classify pork rinds as "meat."

Do you have a Costco near you? They have bacon that is to die for. The product is Coleman bacon and it does not have sugar added.

Am I the only one in the world who actually thinks this sounds good? OBVIOUSLY I would not eat it now, nor would I feed it to my child...But the idea of a sausage wrapped in a chocolate chip pancake...Sounds yummy to me.

When I was eating fast food I LOVED McDonalds hotcakes and sausages with syrup. The sweet and the spicy together....

Deli meat is the worst - not only the sugar, but the preservatives.

The sugar stimulates your appetite and the chemicals cause cancer.

Trader Joe's has great sliced *real* turkey that we use for sandwiches - so much better and the same $$.
