Paul Bunyan size salads...
Whenever I'm feeling like I'm eating too much heavy caloric foods (although low in carbs) I will make myself a HUMONGOUS salad. It usually takes me about an hour or so to eat it all, but it sure takes away the urge to pick, eat, and graze all day long. Does anyone else do this???

Yes, I love big salads (like Elaine on Seinfeld).
I don't do them because I am eating too much, rather I just love making a huge bowl of mixed greens, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, onions, radicchio, evoo/fresh squeezed lemon juice, and some feta and salt and then eating it over several hours (especially in the summer). |

Me too!!! I usually try to use raw spinach because the fiber count is pretty high, but if I don't have spinach then I'll go with romaine. I slice up ONE small roma tomato really thing so it seems like I have more of it, sprinkle in some shredded parm and then I toss it really good with dressing. One trick that I've learned---it's gonna sound yucky, but trust me---I pour some dressing into a cup and add a healthy splash of cold water. Thins the dressing out, it goes further and you use LESS!!! If I'm feeling honery, I'll slice up a little onion too, but usually I skip that part because of all the carbs.

The way you use water is sort of like how i use the lemon juice- really stretches the 2 tablespoons of evoo and coats everything, plus the juice on the bottom of the bowl is the best.

I know that it sounds a little gross, but then again, I'm only adding a splash of cold water. It doesn't change the taste a bit and it makes it think enough to coat everything in the salad. I've always been a person that used too much salad dressing which resulted in me ruining a decent healthy salad. Using the H2O splash has taken care of that nasty habit. I also love to make a huge BLT salad. Cheeseburger Salad is a good one too!!!

a big salad will always settle any urges to eat off plan... even tho it's not in a 'portion-controlled sized bowl ..if you're gonna cheat - do it with salad .. sometimes I just have to eat too much of a good thing - and i always have fresh salad fixings with my fav dressing here to 'binge' on ... in the old days... if i felt a binge coming on i would have ordered a deep dish pizza ..so i'm getting better control in my 'old' age and at most-suffer a pound or two of too much veggie-itis which goes away cuz it was mostly water

I love salad but it would not work for me as a calorie cutting technique, since all of my fav salad toppings and dressings are very calorie dense

I LOVE big salads but avoid them because a head of iceberg lettuce has around 22 grms of carbohydrate
. However, on maintenance, I'm certain to eat a large salad nightly.........![]() |

I usually eat a big old salad everyday for lunch, gotta love the fiber. I generally sub bagged coleslaw mix for lettuce, it keeps better and I find it more nutritious. This way I can have a variety of veggies along with this, I also top it off with things like pumpkin and sunflower seeds.

And no nutrition in that iceberg to boot. But a whole head of Boston only has 4 grams, with 2 grams of fiber to boot. Romaine and the like are only 1 carb per cup before you subtract the fiber, and have much more nutrition than iceberg, which really isn't a food IMHO. Count me in as a salad lover....a huge plate with a can of tuna is one of my fave lunches. Pam |

I try to eat a big ole salad every day. I top it with some chicken breast and feta cheese. YUMMY!!
I also like to sprinkle a tablespoon of hemp hearts on mine for added fiber. Angie |

Salad has been my favorite food since I was a toddler.
If I had to pick one food item that I had to live off of forever, salad would be it. |

I have always loved salads. I do like iceburg lettuce though. I eat salad at least 5 out of 7 days a week. I am a huge veggie lover too, I love to put hot veggies, like broccoli or green beans, on a cold salad and then the dressing.

Had a big salad tonite. I have a special big salad bowl, filled it with Romaine, 1 tomatoe, sliced onion, bacon bits, shredded cheese, a small grilled chicken breast and then for the dressing I mixed 2 tbsp ranch with salsa. Yummy southwest salad! Made me happy.......

But the only thing is, salads taste so much better when somebody else makes them. What's up with that?????

Ranch with salsa is a great idea to stretch the dressing with less carbs. I'll have to give that a try sometime. |

I discovered something interesting a year or so ago by accident. I love to make the stuffed jalapenos that are filled with cheddar cheese, wrapped in bacon and grilled. I would pop them in the microwave the next days and dump them on top of my spinach salad with all the juice. I noticed that I didn't have to put nearly as much dressing on my salad. I've also noticed if I dump in the can of tuna with the oil or sardines with the oil, I practically don't need any dressing.

How funny- I am the opposite. I am very particular about the types of veggies used and the quantity of each and how they are cut . I can appreciate an expertly prepared fancy restaurant salad and enjoy the taste, but to me, the best are always my own.

Me too, streets. I like to make them exactly how I want.
You know what else is good with olive oil and lemon? Put a few pepperoncini on there, but gently squeeze the juice out of them before you toss your salad. It adds a nice spiciness and vinegar kick to your dressing. But do it GENTLY or you could squirt yourself in the eye with hot pepper juice. Don't ask me how I know this. |

I like to make my own salad.
Its a running joke in my family that my cooking skills begin at veggie tray and end at salad. I CAN cook other things but why bother when there's SALAD. Yeah, salad is my specialty dish. ![]() |
