Personally, I think that giving up the cigarettes is ten times more important sticking to a diet. If munching on Fruit Loops is what will get you through, so be it.

I went up ten pounds right away, but am down to 141 now. I've read that there's a diuretic effect with cigarettes and quitting tends to make people gain 3-5 lbs of water weight. I don't know if that's true but it makes me feel better.

You might be able to do both. It's certainly worth a shot. I agree with other folks here that it would be ideal to not smoke AND keep to a diet, but that is probably not realistic for 90% of people. If you have to choose, I think you should focus on quitting.
I could not agree with this more! Quitting the cigs is far more important than anything else. Try to stay on your program but if it comes down to a choice go for FOOD. Give that screaming voice whatever it wants and just get through.

Its difficult but not impossible
The book really helped me understand what I was feeling and that helped me deal
I think this is a good read. It ultimately didn't help me but I know it has helped a lot of people.

I'm having a hard time today. It is taking everything I have to not go to the store and buy some. I haven't done it, and I will not. I am extremely b*itchy, and have no patience. I want my husband to leave me alone.

We were supposed to have people here for supper, or so I thought. Turns out, they never confirmed with DH, so now we have a pie in the house that I will probably eat, as well as ice cream, potato salad, and more crap, that he insisted we buy for these "guests".

Man - God please give me patience. I really need it today.

Here are some thoughts that help snap me out of it.

"Would I pay $200 for that cigarette?" (That's about what I used to spend per month)

"I'm too lucky being healthy to waste it like that"

"It won't make me feel better, just a different type of bad."

"A dried up pile of leaves can't tell me what to do."

My understanding is that smoking causes you to metabolise glycogen form the liver (creating a mini sugar hit) so it would explain the sweet cravings and the munchy side effects, as well as the replacement of the hand to mouth habits.

For me I found that I HAD to create totally new habits - ie when i smakoed I would have 2 or 3 with my morning coffee, so insead of heading outside with my cup I had to head back into the bedroom. When i used to smoke on my breaks I had to NOT head outsde and find a diffrent activity to totally break the habits and triggering contexts.

I do reccomend rescue remedy, loads of herbal tea (calori free hand to mouth activity that soothes those tummy knots), loads of water and deliberate habit replacement. Try to treat the "cravings" as a mystery symptom. Get to understand EXACTLY what the sensations are instead of calling them "craving". A craving implies that there is an item (a forbidden one!) that will satisfy if only you would give in.... but describing "a tightness in your tummy and itchy muscles and aching bones" gives you more choices... maybe stretching or a ot shower would help, soothing herbal tea for the tummy, or a massage... break it down to specifc symptoms and try to find ways to relieve each of those andyou are not only NOT using icotine or sugar, you are also training your body that it can get relief and all the benefits it gained from smoking in other healthier ways.

Congrats on quitting smoking, it's a really tough addiction to break, but you will be so much healthier for it! As for eating off plan, I would try not to, I know it might be really hard, but going off your woe should not be an option. This is the way you're supposed to eat for life, right? So don't let this be an excuse! Just make sure you have plenty of on plan go-to foods. Everyday will get easier to get through the cravings for cigarettes. It is worth what you're going through for the long term benefits. I quit about 14 years ago and now I HATE even the smell of cigarettes...you will get there Congrats!

Thanks everyone. I did cave and had 2 last night. The stress was unbelievable. I feel like such a failure. I however, did eat on plan. The only cheat was some strawberries and cream, which isn't too bad.

I could feel my throat hurt and me chest tighten up when I went to bed last night. I really regret what I did. I will change my habits, I will find other things to do. I will try to reason better with my husband. I will do something fun and cheap today. I will plan an Atkins dinner of steak and mushrooms, and I will not smoke.

I will not smoke today. I will not smoke today. I will not smoke today.

Good for you for even deciding to quit! I smoked for half of my life (16 yrs), got preg. quit, started again, (I know!) quit when I had her, started again (I know! stupid right?) finally when she was starting to walk we were outside and she picked up a butt and put it to her mouth I said NO MORE! Now I had some slips but I havent smoked for 2 yrs now! But it was not easy! Also my DH still smokes so there is that too. So just focus on you and do whatever you need to to take care of yourself. (sending will power your way!) Dont give up!!! You are worth it!
