Low carb from Iraq - long

Hello from Iraq. I haven’t post in a while, I think the last time was when I broke my ankle – but I do lurk a lot. I see a lot of people discouraged lately and I just wanted to share a few things I have learned in the last few months.

I have been in Iraq 3 ½ months and have lost 30 pounds, low carbing… yes it is possible with chow hall food! I made a decision to treat this time away from the “real world” as my own personal “fat camp”. I am fortunate enough to be support personnel and assigned to a large main base. I don’t have to cook, I don’t have to do laundry (drop-off service), I don’t have the daily “family” dramas and found I had time to concentrate on me and understand my body.

What I have learned:
Patience and consistency is key! Weight loss has its pattern, if you are consistent and patient. I will go almost two weeks and the scale won’t budge, then the next two weeks I lose 4-8 pounds and it starts over – same pattern. During those two weeks I don’t tweak or freak out, I just know my body. Now if I go more than three weeks with no loss I look at my eating – I realized was overdoing the dark chocolate and yogurt. Then got back on track.

Dessert (chips/whatever) will always be there. The dining hall is abundant in cakes, ice cream and cookies; I just tell myself if I really want it, it will be there tomorrow. I walk past the display case of cakes every time. I indulge once a month and I’m over it.

Hydration is important. I drink 4-5 bottles of 28 oz water a day. I’ve recognized when I’m thirsty rather than hungry. I occasionally have a diet soda, when I want something sweet and I have a cup a coffee a day, but my primary drink is water. And I can tell when I’m not drinking enough – fatigue and irritability sets in.

Control is strength. There is a lot of drama going on back at home and work beyond my control, so I decided I had to embrace what I could control here to give me peace of mind. I could control what went in my mouth, exercise and my attitude. I feel a rush when I walk past the cakes and cookies. You control food, it doesn’t control you. You want to feel empowered and strong, walk away from the trigger foods.

Exercise is important, but overdoing it can be counter-productive. Exercise is making the “jiggle-puff” firm up; I put on lotion out of the shower and get excited when I see definition. Exercise clears my mind after a long-distance argument with the hubby. Exercise is something I can control. But I have seen too many people get here, go crazy on the weights and exercise, get sore and stop. Also find the time of day that is best for you… I can’t exercise when I first get up. I hate it – I’m not hydrated, my brain is foggy. Best time for me is about three hours before bed, after work and I almost look forward to it.

Exercise complements your way of eating. But, what goes in your mouth will determine your weight loss more than an hour on the treadmill. I am here with a friend of mine from my home base, we both are trying to eat better – she is eating less and lower fat and exercising like a fiend. I’m low carbing and exercising 3-times a week, with aerobic and some weights, and walk everywhere in 110 degree heat. I’m not killing myself, but I have lost more and consistently. I’ve encouraged her just to give up sugar… just the sugar. She is trying, but not consistent… cobbler and gator aide seem to be her weakness. But she has lost 10 pounds.

I work nights so “breakfast” is dinner, but my menu is usually a meat and veggies for breakfast, lunch is a meat, and dinner is usually fried eggs with cheese. We always have a sandwich and salad bar. My staples are usually chicken wings, cheese, tuna and chicken breast. Sometimes I have to scrape off BBQ sauce, or some other sauce they cooked the meat in, but overall there is usually always something I can eat – just making the choice to eat it is the key – control. I do make a cream cheese “dessert” when I want something decadent. Two cream cheese packets, packet of honey and a packet of splenda – stir and enjoy. My friend laughs at my concoction, but is does satisfy the sweet tooth.

I hope this helps some those folks who are disappointed with slower weight loss. Find what makes you tick, everyone is different.

And thank you to everyone on the board… checking in everyday keeps me connected to the real world and is comforting when I get bummed being away from family and friends.
Theresa

Excellent advice and very well-written. I hope everyone reads it.

I completely agree with you re: the patterns our bodies follow, with natural plateaus that end without tweaking -- sometimes they take quite a while to go.

I'm sure you know that honey isn't low carb -- I just wanted to mention that for anyone starting out who is reading this thread.

May you all be home soon!

Theresa-

Thank you for your service to our country for all of us. And thanks, too, for your insightful post. You are absolutely right about exercise--it helps us tone, but we should not rely on it for weight loss. It's all about what we put in our mouths.

It's more difficult for you with all that mess hall temptation, and I admire you for keeping low carb under the circumstances. As you probably know, it's the healthiest WOE apart from weight loss, so you're doing your body a favor by ignoring all those tempting treats.

And your advice about not tweaking when a week or so goes by with no loss is absolutely right on. I have the same experience you describe. Our bodies seem to want to lose on their schedule, not ours.

I wish you health and happiness on this tour, and I hope you'll soon be out of harm's way.

Thank you... it is an honor to serve our country, I've been doing it for 20 years and just signed up for 4 more. Unfortunately the fitness test in the Air Force is getting tougher and I'm just getting older. LOL

SO TRUE! I am a caregiver for my husband, who has multiple health issues. When he's in the hospital or having a bad day, I have very little control. But I can choose to avoid emotional eating, which will only make things worse!

I'm going to add you to my prayer list!

I see your home base is San Antonio? My brother is stationed in San Antonio. (Army)

Thank you for your service! You post is fantastic, too.

It is funny to me that you say such a wide array of desserts is in the mess hall every day. My brother said the army is really concerned about the average weight of all soldiers is increasing so much. I suppose in a war zone, you should be able to eat what you want? To have your discipline in that situation is very admirable. Your 'fat camp' frame of mind is hilarious!!

Thanks, once again...and don't hold my "Army" status against me. I am from Vegas...land of Nellis AFB...and give all of you righteous props!

Please check in regularly, Theresa!!

Theresa, I would also like to join the others in thanking you for serving our country.

Also, I am so ashamed after reading your post. I always tend to fall back on the excuse that I am a stress eater or an emotional eater. I'm sure I don't have a quarter of the stress you face being so far from home in a war zone. Maybe your post was the one that I needed to show me that I have no excuse for not eating in a healthy way and for not losing this excess weight I've carred for so long.

Thank you so much for the advice. I will be sending up prayers for your safety and well-being!

Congratulations, on the weight loss.

My husband is active duty servicemember and when he was gone for 15 months -- I was the ONE who lost the weight. So, I'll be sure too show him that it CAN be done away from home.

Keep up the good work and come home safe!

Wow. Theresa! God bless you for your service. I am VERY pro-military. I have a friend who is in Iraq now contracting for the 2nd yr. He also served a tour in the National Guard. It's so difficult to be away from family and friends. I am in awe of those who serve!!

Good luck on your weightloss goals. Sounds like you are doing GREAT! If you aren't stress eating, none of the rest of us can use that excuse either!

I wasn't LCing at the time but I lost 13 pounds in 3 months in Afghanistan. I ate oatmeal every morning for breakfast and drank 6 (!) cartons a day of 2% milk, 2 with every meal. I horded milk! We had a great salad bar and there was generally a meat or two that wasn't breaded. I also rode a bike 6 1/2 miles every day in mostly gravel around the perimeter of the base. It was a fabulous experience. I was with a surgical hospital. You will be in our thoughts and we will pray for your safe return. Thank you for what you are doing.

Thank you for your post! I am in Iraq and LC'ing, too. I also work nights. I tend to "skip" my breakfast at the chow hall and make tuna w/mayo or a protein shake. I really appreciate your suggestions for chow hall LC'ing. Good luck with the rest of your tour.
